Chelsea Ownership Talks: Boehly and Walter Consider Selling Stakes to Clearlake Capital
Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are reportedly in discussions to sell their shares in Chelsea FC to majority stakeholder Clearlake Capital. This move could mark the biggest change in the club's ownership since the end of the Roman Abramovich era in 2022.
BlueCo Consortium’s Possible Exit
Just over four years after BlueCo's £2.5 billion acquisition of Chelsea, Boehly and Walter might be ready to exit by selling their stakes to Clearlake Capital, which already owns 61.5% of the club. The remaining 38.5% is divided equally between Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, aged 90. A new deal could place Chelsea's value at more than £5 billion.
Heavy Spending Without Major Silverware
The potential sale comes after Chelsea invested nearly £1.5 billion on player transfers since May 2022. Despite this huge outlay, the club has yet to secure a Premier League title or Champions League trophy during this period, with results proving inconsistent and the managerial position frequently changing.
Internal Tensions and Stadium Plans
Although insiders deny any personal conflicts between Clearlake co-founder Behdad Eghbali and Boehly, reports claim ongoing talks have taken place for two years regarding a buyout amid what some describe as an internal "civil war." A significant sticking point appears to be disagreements over plans for a new stadium. Fans have also expressed frustration about rising ticket prices and the ownership's multi-club approach under BlueCo.
New Sporting Direction Under Xabi Alonso
During this uncertain period at board level, Xabi Alonso has taken charge of Chelsea’s first team. The summer transfer window saw the club spend over £300 million on new players while bringing in £143 million through sales. Alonso’s arrival signals a shift away from focusing solely on youthful talent towards adding experienced leaders like Premier League veterans Jordan Henderson (36) and Danny Welbeck (35). This new strategy contrasts with previous windows that prioritized expensive signings of younger, less proven players.
Clearlake Capital’s Growing Control
If the sale goes through, Clearlake Capital, led by Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, will gain near-total control of Chelsea's operations. There is also a governance clause set to transfer the chairman role from Boehly to a Clearlake representative next May.
For players and staff, the hope remains that resolving ownership uncertainties will bring stability to a club long plagued by upheaval. As Chelsea prepare to face West London rivals Fulham in their Premier League opener on August 24th at 21:00, attention will be on whether Alonso’s revamped squad can produce results regardless of who holds the reins behind the scenes.
