Chelsea’s Pre-Season Tour in Hong Kong: New Faces and Redemption

Chelsea’s pre-season tour has rolled into Hong Kong – and with it comes a flurry of new faces, returning stories and one striking redemption arc.

Mudryk cleared and back in blue

Mykhailo Mudryk will step off the plane on Monday with more than just a kit bag on his shoulders. He arrives with his name cleared.

The 25-year-old Ukrainian winger is free to play competitive football again after serving 20 months on the sidelines following a positive test for meldonium, a substance that was on the banned list at the time. Scientific guidance has since shifted. Under today’s criteria, that original test would not have led to a doping violation.

The outcome is stark: Mudryk, once frozen out, can now simply be a footballer again.

He is due to join the squad in Hong Kong just over 48 hours before Chelsea face Juventus in a high-profile friendly at the Kai Tak Stadium on Wednesday evening. Match sharpness will be a question. Motivation will not.

Welbeck flies in to lead the line

Mudryk is not the only arrival. Danny Welbeck is also due in Hong Kong after Chelsea reached an agreement with Brighton for the 35-year-old striker, the fee believed to be negligible.

Welbeck completed his medical in London last week and has signed a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge. For a squad being reshaped under Xabi Alonso, his experience, movement and dressing-room presence offer immediate value, even if expectations on the pitch will be carefully managed.

His first meeting with his new teammates is set to come on tour, a long way from west London but an ideal stage to start building chemistry.

Henderson signs on, but stays home

Jordan Henderson will also become a Chelsea player, pending official confirmation, yet he will not be part of the Hong Kong leg.

The 36-year-old midfielder is recovering from a severe left forearm and wrist fracture suffered in a freak incident, when he fell over an advertising hoarding after England’s win over Mexico at the World Cup. The injury has delayed his integration into Alonso’s sessions, but the deal is effectively in place.

His time with Chelsea will begin later, away from the cameras and the humidity of Hong Kong.

Quenda and Penders join the tour

Two more names are set to link up with the squad later in the week: Geovany Quenda and Mike Penders.

Quenda, signed from Sporting CP this summer, was originally due to travel to Sydney last month but picked up a minor knock in a behind-closed-doors friendly. He stayed back at Cobham for rehabilitation, a small setback at the start of a new chapter.

He is now fit, available and eager to make an impression on Alonso, who will be assessing how quickly the young arrival can adapt to Chelsea’s demands.

Penders, meanwhile, has been on an extended break after his World Cup duties with Belgium. His delayed return is scheduled to end in Hong Kong, where he will fold into a group already deep into their pre-season rhythm.

Set-piece specialist on the way

Chelsea’s travelling party is not just about players. The club are also expected to welcome Austin MacPhee after striking an agreement with Aston Villa for the highly regarded set-piece coach.

MacPhee’s reputation in dead-ball situations is strong, and his arrival underlines how seriously Chelsea are treating the finer details of Alonso’s rebuild. Whether he will be on the pitch for Tuesday evening’s open training session in Hong Kong is not yet clear, but his influence is likely to be felt quickly once he links up.

Juventus, Kai Tak and a changing Chelsea
