Chelsea’s Pre-Season Tour: New Faces and Battles Ahead

Chelsea’s pre-season tour is starting to look a lot more like Xabi Alonso’s team.

The manager is about to get a fresh wave of reinforcements in Hong Kong, headlined by the return of Mykhailo Mudryk, who has been cleared to play again and flew in overnight.

The 25-year-old Ukraine international landed on Monday alongside Danny Welbeck as Chelsea step up preparations for their next friendly against Juventus. After a disjointed 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, Alonso finally has more of his attacking pieces on the board.

New faces, new battles

There is more than just Mudryk and Welbeck stepping off the plane.

Geovany Quenda, the winger signed from Sporting for £40m, has joined up with the squad and immediately adds intrigue on the flanks. His arrival sharpens the competition out wide, with Mudryk back in the frame and others already jostling for minutes.

Behind them, another contest is brewing.

Goalkeeper Mike Penders has also linked up with the group, with Alonso openly teasing an “open race” for the number-one shirt with Robert Sanchez. Pre-season can often feel like a fitness exercise; for Chelsea’s goalkeepers, it suddenly looks like an audition.

Moises Caicedo and Nicolas Jackson, both late arrivals on the tour, sat out the loss to Spurs on Saturday. Alonso has made it clear that will change.

He confirmed they will feature against Juventus, a notable step as he edges closer to something resembling his first-choice spine. The match offers an early glimpse of how he might blend Caicedo’s control and Jackson’s movement into his evolving system.
