Chelsea's Cole Palmer to Withdraw from England Squad Alongside Manchester United Players Despite Tuchel's Warning
Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer is poised to pull out of the latest England squad, prioritizing his fitness over international duty. This decision comes despite Thomas Tuchel's recent call for Palmer to prove his worth following a controversial omission from the World Cup roster.
Load Management Forces Palmer’s Absence
According to The Athletic, Palmer will skip the upcoming international break to manage his physical condition carefully. He played the full 90 minutes during Chelsea's 3-0 loss to Brentford but will now rest instead of joining the England camp.
He won’t be alone; Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also likely to miss the Nations League matches. Rashford continues to deal with a persistent hip injury that has needed cautious handling since the World Cup, leading to his substitution in the 77th minute against Fulham. Meanwhile, 21-year-old Mainoo, who was in the World Cup squad but did not get playing time, is nursing an injury after an 80-minute outing at Craven Cottage.
Tuchel Urges Palmer to Justify His Recall
Palmer’s choice to protect his fitness contrasts with Tuchel's demand for performance. The coach emphasized that while selection is one thing, delivering on the pitch is another. Palmer last played for England in March against Japan and was notably absent from the World Cup squad.
"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England," Tuchel said. "Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kind of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination."
Tuchel acknowledged Palmer’s recent form with four goals and two assists in seven games, stating, "He has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back. I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent [Alexander-Arnold]." He added that Palmer was never off their radar and must now demonstrate his best self.
Alonso Supports Palmer’s Cautious Approach
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso recently supported Palmer’s focus on fitness. "Sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury or whatever to learn from that," Alonso explained. "Cole has gone through a difficult period with the injury, and now he’s working really hard to have the prevention not to have to feel those symptoms."
Injury Struggles Mark 2025-26 Season
Palmer's decision reflects the challenges of his injury-hit 2025-26 season. Despite making 34 appearances, including 24 Premier League starts, and scoring 11 goals with three assists, thigh and hamstring issues limited his consistency. His recent surge under Alonso has been promising for Chelsea, yet skipping England duty underscores a plan focused on long-term health.
With just two goals in 14 senior England caps, Palmer still faces work to secure a regular spot in Tuchel’s starting lineup.
England Faces Tough Nations League Run Without Key Players
The absence of Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo leaves England facing a demanding Nations League schedule. Tuchel’s team will host reigning World Cup champions Spain at Wembley on September 26, then travel to Prague for a match against the Czech Republic on September 29, followed by a game in Croatia on October 3.
The international window closes with a home fixture against the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6. Tuchel must find alternatives to navigate this intense stretch and aim for positive results without several key players.
