Crystal Palace Under WSL Investigation for Substitution Rule Breach, Risking Points Deduction

Crystal Palace find themselves embroiled in controversy following their recent Women’s Super League win against Everton. Despite a 1-0 victory secured by Lexi Lloyd-Smith’s early goal, the club is now under investigation for breaking substitution rules, putting their points at risk.

Substitution Irregularity Clouds Opening Win

The Eagles’ debut season in the Women’s Super League has taken a turbulent path. During their match on Sunday, they used four separate substitution windows, exceeding the allowed three. Although teams can make up to five substitutions, the regulations limit changes to only three stoppages in play, excluding halftime.

This breach caught the attention of league officials who have since launched an inquiry. The problematic substitution happened late in stoppage time of the second half when manager Jo Potter introduced Kirsty Howat for Shannon O’Brien. Earlier, three other substitution windows had been used to bring on Abbie Larkin, Ashleigh Weerden, and Allyson Swaby.

WSL Confirms Official Investigation

"We can confirm there was a breach of competition rules in the Crystal Palace versus Everton match. Crystal Palace used a fourth substitution opportunity during a fourth stoppage in play, when the rules permit a maximum of three substitution opportunities per match. We will now conduct an investigation alongside both clubs and Pro Ref and update in due course."

The league’s statement clarified that this infraction concerns the number of substitution windows rather than how many players were replaced.

Possible Penalties Include Points Deduction or Replay

The WSL does not apply an automatic penalty for such infringements, but Crystal Palace could face serious consequences. Their case might go before an independent tribunal with powers ranging from warnings and fines to docking points or ordering a replay of the match. Replaying the fixture would cancel out the original 1-0 result, forcing a rematch between Palace and Everton.

Match Officials Also Disciplined

Responsibility extends beyond the club as the refereeing team failed to stop the illegal substitution. Led by whistleblower Megan Wilson, the entire officiating crew has been suspended from the upcoming WSL fixtures due to this oversight.
