Daley Blind's Impact at Ajax: A Leadership Return

Daley Blind did not ease his way back into Ajax. He walked straight into the heart of it.

Signed on a free from Girona after Jordi Cruyff moved quickly to close the deal before pre-season, the former Manchester United defender returned to Amsterdam with expectation and emotion swirling around him. Any doubts about whether this was a sentimental move vanished almost immediately.

Reunited with his former manager Míchel, Blind has already nailed down a starting place. Not eased in. Not rotated. Installed. From the first sessions, his voice has cut through the noise on the training pitch and on matchdays, organising, correcting, demanding. Ajax wanted leadership; Blind has started supplying it from the back.

The impact has been felt beyond his own position. His passing from deep and constant coaching during games have lifted those in front of him. Within the club, there is already a sense that the back line now has a brain as well as a spine.

It is exactly that influence that has convinced former Ajax player Hedwiges Maduro that Blind is the standout addition of the summer so far. Maduro has gone further, placing Blind in the same bracket as Jordan Henderson in terms of what he brings to a dressing room and a team’s structure.

"You can already see that he is improving players with his coaching and passing," Maduro told VoetbalPrimeur. "As a result, Davy Klaassen and Steven Berghuis are also getting better. He can take on the role of Jordan Henderson, that is something Ajax has certainly missed over the past year."

For a club that spent last season searching for a voice, Blind’s return has arrived like a corrective. The question now is not whether he still belongs at this level, but how far his second spell can drag Ajax back towards the standards they expect.
