Declan Rice Seeks Instant Return to Arsenal After World Cup
Declan Rice is in no mood for a gentle reintroduction to club football.
Barely weeks after helping England go the distance at the 2026 World Cup, the Arsenal midfielder has already told Mikel Arteta he wants to be available to play from the very first day he walks back into pre-season.
Rice pushes for instant return
Arsenal’s England, Spain, and France internationals are all due a late return after their summer in North America, having stayed with their countries right to the final day of the tournament. The England contingent – Rice, Bukayo Saka, Noni Madueke, and Eberechi Eze – played their last World Cup match on July 18, triggering a minimum three-week break.
On paper, that pushes their holidays through to August 9. For most players, that date would simply mark fitness tests, light running, and a careful ramp-up.
Rice has other ideas.
Arteta, speaking to Arsenal.com, revealed the mindset driving his midfielder’s plans. “When I speak to Declan, he is already talking, ‘okay, if I come this day, then I can play (then)’, and the rest the same,” the manager said. The Spaniard added that Arsenal are effectively running “three different pre-seasons with different groups”, but stressed that “the most important thing is not the programme, it is the attitude behind the programme.”
Rice’s attitude is clear: no easing in, no time wasted.
Dortmund on day one?
That approach opens up a striking possibility. August 9, the day his holiday is due to end, is also the date of the Emirates Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund. On a normal schedule, a player returning from three weeks off would watch that game from the stands, maybe the bench at best.
Rice is pushing to flip that script.
If he gets his way, he could feature in the squad on the very day he reports back, a rare sight at elite level given the physical and mental toll of a deep World Cup run. Arsenal, of course, will balance that enthusiasm with caution. They know the season will be long, and Rice remains central to everything they want to build.
The more likely plan is to target the following week as his real launchpad: a friendly against Como on the Wednesday, then the Community Shield showdown with Manchester City on the Sunday. Those fixtures carry a different edge, a different tempo. They are where Arteta will want his midfield general fully tuned.
Yet if Rice can take even a brief cameo against Dortmund – 20 minutes, 30 at most – it sharpens his readiness for what follows. Match rhythm, contact, the feel of the ball under pressure: those things return quicker on the pitch than on the training ground.
Arsenal know that. Rice knows it even more. And if his body matches his ambition, he could walk straight off the beach and into the heart of Arteta’s plans, with barely a pause for breath.
