Declan Rice Isolates as England Prepares for Norway Clash
Declan Rice has been separated from the rest of the England squad after falling ill on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with medical staff moving quickly to prevent a wider outbreak in camp.
The Arsenal midfielder, who dragged himself through last season carrying hamstring and lower-back problems, has now been hit by a bug that has already cost him two consecutive training sessions. For a player who rarely misses a minute, his absence from the grass is striking.
England’s staff have acted decisively. Rice has been kept away from the main group as a precaution, with the fear that a single case could ripple through the squad at the worst possible time. The quarter-final arrives on Saturday; there is no room for a virus to run unchecked.
Inside the camp, the mood remains calm. The belief is that the illness has been contained, even if nobody can yet say with certainty whether Rice will be fit enough to face Norway. His availability now hangs over the tie, a significant question for a side built on his authority in midfield.
While England monitor their anchor man, Arsenal are watching from a distance with their own concerns. Rice is already due to report late for pre-season because of his World Cup involvement, and his lingering muscle issues have been an ongoing storyline since last term at the Emirates Stadium.
Mikel Arteta’s squad will regroup in Girona on August 1, but the manager knows he will start that camp without several of his key names. Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke are all set to miss the opening stages of summer preparations as they take the standard three-week break once their World Cup campaigns end.
That schedule almost certainly rules the quartet out of Arsenal’s first pre-season fixture and, if England progress to the semi-finals, they are also highly unlikely to feature in the second game on August 5 in Dublin against Real Betis. Arteta’s early sessions will be built around a skeleton of his full-strength side.
The absences do not stop there. Norway’s Martin Odegaard, France’s William Saliba, Spain’s David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino, and Belgium’s Leandro Trossard are also expected to miss the start of Arsenal’s pre-season due to their own international duties.
France have already punched their ticket to the last four with a 2-0 win over Morocco, while Spain face Belgium tonight for a place in the semi-finals. Each result nudges Arsenal’s calendar again, stretching the gap between World Cup intensity and club reintegration.
For now, though, all eyes are on one room in the England camp and the player inside it. If Rice recovers in time, England’s midfield will look as assured as ever against Norway. If he does not, both country and club will feel the ripple effects well beyond Saturday.
