Derby County's Young Guns Shine in 3-1 Victory Over Mansfield

Derby County’s kids and contenders took centre stage – and took their chance – as a largely second-string side saw off Mansfield Town 3-1 in a lively pre-season run-out.

With much of the senior group earmarked for duty at Burton Albion tomorrow, this was a night for the understudies. They didn’t play like it.

Derby struck first. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen, drifting into space on the flank, whipped in a superb cross and Dajaune Brown did the rest, timing his run and finishing with the assurance of a player desperate to nudge his way into John Eustace’s thoughts.

Mansfield, though, refused to play the role of sparring partner. They targeted the channels, stretched Derby’s makeshift back line and were rewarded when Michael Smith broke free down the right. Once a Derby target, he showed exactly why: a sharp chop onto his left foot, a curling strike beyond the reach of Josh Vickers and the scores were level.

That woke the game up. Smith’s equaliser swung the momentum, and Vickers suddenly found himself busy. The Derby goalkeeper had to produce a terrific stop to keep out David McGoldrick, the former Rams forward finding familiar pockets of space and reminding the home crowd of his enduring craft.

The interval arrived with the contest finely balanced, and it didn’t stay cagey for long after the restart.

Smith almost flipped the script again when he crashed a header against the bar from a corner, a warning that Mansfield were still very much in it. Derby responded by driving through the heart of midfield, Owen Eames surging forward and feeding Salvesen, only for the forward to fire straight at Lewis.

The game had opened up now. McGoldrick tried to seize it, unleashing a drive from outside the box that forced Vickers into another full-stretch save. Just as Mansfield looked ready to turn pressure into control, Derby landed the punch that changed the night.

Charlie Smith picked up the ball 20 yards out, glanced up and guided a measured strike into the bottom corner. No fuss, no backlift drama – just a clean, confident hit that restored Derby’s lead and underlined the composure running through their younger ranks.

From there, the sense grew that the next goal would decide whether this became a scrap or a statement. Derby made sure it was the latter.

Corey Blackett-Taylor, lively and direct, drove at Mansfield and unsettled their back line. His work carved out the opening and Cruz Allen applied the finish, steering his effort past Harris to give Derby breathing space and, ultimately, control of the contest.

A pre-season friendly won’t define Eustace’s campaign. But on a night when the spotlight shifted away from the established names, Derby’s fringe and academy players didn’t just fill shirts. They made their case.
