Derry City Triumphs 2–0 Over Drogheda United: Dummigan’s Stunning Strike
The new grass at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium barely had time to settle before Cameron Dummigan stamped his mark all over it.
A swerving, curling, 25-yard strike from the midfielder lit up Derry City’s night and set them on their way to a controlled, convincing win over Drogheda United, sealed deep into stoppage time by Adam O’Reilly.
A fast start, a familiar frustration
Derry came out as if determined to test every blade of the new surface. Within three minutes they should have been ahead.
James Olayinka burst through the middle and, even with a mishit shot, turned it into a chance. The ball squirmed perfectly into the path of Michael Duffy, who seemed certain to score from close range. Luke Dennison had other ideas, spreading himself and blocking superbly to keep Drogheda level before most in the ground had settled into their seats.
The home side kept coming.
On 25 minutes, O’Reilly slipped a clever pass down the left for Brandon Fleming. His cross took a deflection and dropped invitingly for Olayinka. The midfielder met it sweetly on the half-volley, side-footing with control rather than power, but his effort thundered back off the crossbar. The Brandywell groaned; Drogheda breathed again.
Dummigan’s moment of brilliance
The pressure finally told, and in some style.
Three minutes after Olayinka’s effort shook the bar, Dummigan took centre stage. Picking up possession 25 yards out, the midfielder shaped his body and whipped a vicious curling shot high into the top-left corner. Dennison flew, the crowd rose, but the ball was already nestling in the net.
Having already collected May’s Goal of the Month, Dummigan produced a strike to match any in his growing catalogue. As re-openers go for a new pitch, it was close to perfect.
Drogheda, though, refused to fold. Just past the half-hour, Thomas Oluwa found a yard inside the box and let fly. His shot beat Eddie Beach but not the frame of the goal, clipping the top of the bar on its way over. It was a warning that, for all Derry’s control, the margin remained thin.
Liam Boyce then slipped Duffy through on the right, the winger driving towards the six-yard box and drilling a low effort that Dennison again saved well, diving to his right. Duffy’s influence grew, but the second goal continued to elude Derry before the break.
Derry in control, Drogheda hanging on
After half-time, the pattern barely changed. Derry pushed, Drogheda clung on.
Early in the second half, Duffy almost delivered the cushion his side craved. Cutting in from the right edge of the area, he let fly with a dipping strike that had Dennison beaten. This time it was the roof of the net, not the inside, that received the ball.
The visitors struggled to build any sustained pressure. Derry’s midfield, with O’Reilly and Olayinka busy and aggressive, snapped into challenges and recycled possession, keeping Drogheda penned back for long spells.
Alan Patchell’s whistle broke the flow only occasionally. The game’s rhythm belonged to Derry.
Late concern, late reward
There was one cloud for the home side. On 82 minutes, Darragh Markey, introduced earlier despite carrying an Achilles issue, pulled up again. His night ended prematurely, Rob Slevin coming on as Derry reshuffled and saw out what was left of the contest.
If there was any anxiety about a late sting, Derry killed it in stoppage time with a goal that summed up their night: sharp, composed, ruthless.
On 93 minutes, a slick counter ripped Drogheda open. Duffy, once more at the heart of it, timed his run and his pass to perfection, rolling the ball across goal. O’Reilly arrived with calm assurance, side-footing past Dennison and into the corner to finally give the scoreline the gloss Derry’s performance deserved.
The Brandywell crowd knew. This was not just three points; it was a statement on a new surface, with a familiar intent. If Derry move the ball this confidently on their fresh grass, plenty more visiting sides will leave here with nothing.
