Diego Simeone Confirms Julian Alvarez Will Start on the Bench
Diego Simeone has drawn a hard line before a ball has even been kicked in LaLiga.
Atletico Madrid’s head coach has confirmed that Julian Alvarez will start the season on the bench on Wednesday, as the striker’s future hangs over the club like a storm cloud. The former Manchester City forward wants out. His preferred destination is clear: Barcelona.
Reports in Spain suggest Barca are in pole position to land the Argentine despite strong interest from Premier League champions Arsenal, who have been tracking Alvarez as a marquee attacking addition. The tug-of-war is fierce, but Atletico’s hierarchy is sending its own message.
Club CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has been adamant: Atletico would not even accept €200m for Alvarez.
The stance is defiant, almost provocative, and sits in stark contrast to the player’s desire to move. For now, that conflict leaves Simeone starting the campaign without his star striker in the XI and with a transfer saga raging in the background.
City’s midfield reshuffle turns expensive
Up in Manchester, the numbers are climbing fast.
Manchester City remain keen on Enzo Fernandez, but their timing could cost them dearly. City missed Chelsea’s self-imposed Friday deadline for offers, and the price has gone up. The Premier League champions had already been staring at a £120m demand last week; now they are braced for an even steeper fee if they want to prise the World Cup winner out of Stamford Bridge.
At the same time, City are moving aggressively for the next big thing. They are set to sign 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi for £85m, a staggering figure for a teenager and a clear statement about how they see his potential.
That deal comes in the wake of a seismic departure. Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has been sold to Barcelona in a transfer worth up to £65m, ripping out the anchor of Pep Guardiola’s midfield and forcing City into a rapid rebuild in the centre of the pitch. Lose Rodri, chase Enzo, gamble big on Bouaddi: City’s engine room is being rewritten in one summer.
United shut the door on Bruno approach
Across town, Manchester United are facing their own test of resolve.
Galatasaray have launched an audacious move for United captain Bruno Fernandes, identifying the Portugal international as the marquee name to light up their summer. The Turkish club are prepared to put serious money on the table, including a financial package that would have doubled the 31-year-old’s salary.
United’s answer is blunt. Fernandes is not for sale.
The club see their captain as central to their plans and are ready to block Galatasaray’s push, no matter how tempting the offer for the player might look on paper. For now, the message from Old Trafford is simple: hands off.
Liverpool cool on Mbaye but stay alive on Barcola
On Merseyside, Liverpool’s forward planning has taken a twist.
The club had reportedly agreed terms with Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye, an 18-year-old forward seen as one for the future. Now the wind has changed. Fresh rumours indicate Liverpool are stepping back from a move for Mbaye, even as they keep their interest alive in his more established teammate Bradley Barcola.
Both Mbaye and France international Barcola were left out of PSG’s squad for the French Super Cup on Sunday, a decision that only sharpened speculation around their futures. PSG, newly crowned European champions, were prepared to demand £145m for Barcola, who is also on Arsenal’s radar.
Liverpool, though, are not rushing to meet that figure. They are prepared to play the long game, to negotiate, to wait for the right moment rather than blink first in a market that is spiralling upward.
From Madrid to Manchester to Merseyside, the numbers are eye-watering, the stances are hardening, and the window is far from done.
