Christophe Dugarry Criticizes Kylian Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Ambitions as 'Childish and Pathetic'

Former France international Christophe Dugarry has strongly criticized Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid forward, for openly chasing the Ballon d'Or award. The 1998 World Cup winner thinks Mbappe’s public quest for personal awards overshadows his role as a leader for both club and country.

The relationship between past French stars and today’s players is often tense, but Dugarry’s remarks about Mbappe are particularly harsh. After Mbappe’s recent comments expressing his wish to win the Golden Ball, Dugarry condemned the forward’s apparent focus on personal glory instead of team success.

Known for speaking his mind, Dugarry suggested that campaigning openly for such an award is beneath someone of Mbappe’s standing in football.

“Childish and Pathetic”

Dugarry did not hold back when addressing the issue, especially given Mbappe’s position as captain of the French national team. In a passionate rant, he said:

“To publicly ask for an individual award like that, I find it CHILDISH and PATHETIC. There’s nothing great about asking for it, especially as captain of your national team.”

Mbappe’s Confidence Remains Strong

The attack comes after Mbappe admitted he feels well placed to finally claim the prestigious trophy. Speaking about his chances, the 27-year-old forward highlighted how playing for Real Madrid, arguably the world’s biggest club, naturally puts him in the frame for such honours.

“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappe said. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”

A Stain on Mbappe’s Record?

Despite scoring 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid last season, critics point to Mbappe’s failure to win the Champions League during his time at Paris Saint-Germain as a blemish on his record.

Dugarry believes this emphasis on individual statistics over team achievements reflects a larger issue in modern football, where star players often overshadow collective effort.

He added:

“Football is becoming more and more individualistic, and far too often it makes me sick. Instead of talking about yourself and individual awards, you should be talking about the team, about sharing success and about the trophies you didn’t win but wanted to win together.”
