Gay's Form and Partnerships

Gay’s century at Emirates Old Trafford marked his fourth in 10 Championship innings this season. Despite Durham having already secured the Division Two title, they showed no signs of easing off.

He shared a crucial 114-run partnership with Ben McKinney, who scored 71 and surpassed 1,000 first-class runs for the season. Afterwards, Gay combined with Mayank Agarwal for a 168-run stand. Gay was eventually caught at second slip off Ben Walkden when Durham was just eight runs shy of earning a second batting point.

Lancashire's Bowling and Fielding Challenges

Lancashire’s bowlers faced a difficult day but found some relief by taking three wickets during the evening session. Still, the team struggled in the field, dropping four catches from Durham’s top batsmen, which proved costly.

The dominance of Durham was apparent by lunch when the visitors stood at 112-1, with McKinney unbeaten on 64. Early in the morning, Alex Lees was dismissed cheaply, caught behind off Tom Bailey for three runs.

By the break, McKinney and Gay had compiled an unbroken partnership of 102, hitting 17 boundaries on a pitch that justified the decision to bat first.

The afternoon saw McKinney fall for 71 after edging a delivery from Bailey to wicketkeeper Matty Hurst. This ended a 114-run second-wicket partnership. Despite the setback, Durham maintained control.

Gay was joined by India’s Mayank Agarwal, who impressed early with a pull shot yielding four and six runs off consecutive balls. Gay reached his century from 156 balls, marking his 14th boundary four with a stroke through midwicket.

Agarwal brought up his fifty just before tea, completing it in 101 balls. At that stage, Durham were 247-2, the pair having added 123 runs together.

Evening Session Developments

Durham’s batters continued calmly until Gay was caught off Ben Walkden’s bowling, a catch taken by Harris. This dismissal triggered a productive spell for Lancashire’s left-arm spinner Noman Ali, who took two more wickets.

Umpire Hassan Adnan ruled Colin Ackermann out caught by Hurst for six runs. Agarwal also departed after a catch to Josh Bohannon at cover, ending on 66.

These wickets left Durham at 306-5, but Ollie Robinson and Kasey Aldridge guided the innings to a third bonus point at stumps. Noman Ali finished with figures of 2-110.
