Gary Neville Applauds Mikel Arteta’s Half-Time Substitution of Christos Tzolis in Arsenal’s Win Over Aston Villa

During Arsenal’s narrow 1-0 victory against Aston Villa, manager Mikel Arteta made a bold decision by substituting new signing Christos Tzolis at half-time. The £34 million winger, who had an impressive start with Arsenal, found himself struggling against Villa’s defense, particularly against Matty Cash.

Tzolis, who had shone earlier in the season with two assists in the Community Shield and a strong performance against Coventry City, faced his toughest challenge at Villa Park. Former Manchester United star Gary Neville, commenting for Sky Sports, agreed with Arteta’s call. He pointed out that Tzolis was clearly having a hard time dealing with Cash’s aggressive marking.

“I’m not surprised he’s coming off and not just because of the yellow card,” Neville said. “He really was struggling on this side. Matty Cash was really aggressive against him.”

Arsenal finally broke through just past the hour mark thanks to a well-crafted move. Riccardo Calafiori penetrated Villa’s defense and provided a perfect pass to Bukayo Saka, who calmly finished amid a scramble to score the winning goal.

“It’s a brilliant goal, it really is,” Neville praised. “Arsenal are so patient, so trusting of their defence that they don’t need to rush. Calafiori does exceptionally well. Riccardo Calafiori just opens up his body and makes that little dart in behind, and then talk about putting it on a plate.”

Neville also highlighted the clever run by Saka, describing his positioning as ideal and the celebration in front of the Arsenal supporters as memorable.
