Germany's Defensive Struggles Overshadow Sane’s Bright Start in 2-1 Loss to Ecuador

Germany began with strong attacking energy but showed serious weaknesses at the back, resulting in a 2-1 defeat against Ecuador. This match, played in East Rutherford, New Jersey, marked the end of the group stage for Julian Nagelsmann’s squad. Despite an early goal from Leroy Sane, Germany conceded twice and failed to respond effectively.

A Lucky Early Goal and a Swift Response

The opening goal came thanks to a bit of fortune. Alex Pavlovic won possession but unintentionally struck Pedro Vite's face. Florian Wirtz quickly recovered the loose ball and set up Sane, who finished confidently. The goal stood despite Ecuador’s protests.

"When you have such a good start to a game and you take the lead, you have to focus on the spaces. Today we lost control a little bit after we took the lead," Nagelsmann admitted after the match.

Ecuador responded with determination. Nilson Angulo scored from 20 yards out to level the match, marking Ecuador’s first goal in the tournament. After that, the game slowed down into a battle filled with tackles and effort but few clear chances.

"It was difficult to adjust to Ecuador because they put pressure on us," said Nagelsmann.

Second Half Chaos and Ecuador’s Decisive Strike

Early in the second half, Germany thought they earned a penalty when Kai Havertz was fouled in the box, but the referee called it back due to a prior foul. From there, Ecuador took over. The crowd, largely supporting Ecuador, energized the team, which pushed hard for the win they needed to advance.

Kevin Rodriguez outjumped Jonathan Tah, and Gonzalo Plata stretched past Manuel Neuer to score the winning goal. The stadium erupted as Ecuador celebrated wildly.

"That’s what life is about, learning how to suffer and having faith, belief, poise, confidence. In the face of adversity, we have always shown calmness," Ecuador manager Sebastian Beccacece said, celebrating his team's effort.

Germany tried to push forward, but many starters had been rotated out by this point. The substitutes showed energy but lacked creativity.

"Defeat is never good, not even in a game when you cannot lose the group victory. We learn our lessons and go on," Nagelsmann remarked.
