Getafe Initiates Talks for Liverpool's Bajcetic Amid Injury Struggles
Stefan Bajcetic’s Liverpool story, once racing along at full tilt, has juddered into a standstill. Now Spain might offer the escape route.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that Getafe have opened talks to sign the 21-year-old midfielder, with discussions under way over the “formula” of a deal. The structure is still unclear – loan or permanent – but the intent from the LaLiga side is on the table as the window heads into its final two weeks.
From derby star to injury doubt
Not long ago, Bajcetic looked like Liverpool’s next great midfield find.
In the months after the 2022 World Cup, he broke into the first team as an 18-year-old and immediately carried himself like he belonged. His standout display came in a derby win in early 2023, when he snapped into challenges, glided through pressure and played with a fearlessness that lit up Anfield. It felt like the start of something.
Then the brakes went on.
Persistent injuries have wrecked his rhythm. Since the tail end of the 2024/25 season, he hasn’t kicked a competitive ball. The momentum that once seemed unstoppable simply evaporated.
Pre-season chance that never came
There was at least a flicker of good news this summer. Bajcetic finally returned to full training and boarded the plane for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States, a trip that should have been his platform to reintroduce himself under Andoni Iraola.
He never got that shot.
Despite training with the group, he didn’t feature in any of Liverpool’s pre-season games. While others staked claims, he watched on, still waiting for a window that never opened.
That absence has been costly. Trey Nyoni’s excellent form has driven him up the pecking order, and Bajcetic has slipped behind. Even the possibility of Curtis Jones leaving for Inter Milan has not been enough to push the Spaniard back into Iraola’s immediate plans.
Getafe’s pitch – and a big decision
Romano’s update that Getafe have opened talks brings Bajcetic to a clear turning point. The Spanish club are discussing a deal to take him back to his homeland, but key details remain under wraps: loan or permanent, fee, buy options, all still to be thrashed out.
From Liverpool’s perspective, it is hard to judge the move without those numbers and conditions. A loan could rebuild his fitness and confidence without closing the door at Anfield. A permanent sale would be a far more definitive call on a player whose ceiling once looked so high.
For Bajcetic himself, the equation is more straightforward.
After months of “injury hell” and a summer of watching from the sidelines, regular football must feel priceless. If Getafe can offer him consistent minutes in LaLiga, the lure will be strong. At 21, he needs a pitch, not a place on the rehab list or the bench.
Liverpool once saw him as a midfielder for the future. The next fortnight will show whether that future still lies on Merseyside, or whether it restarts in blue in the south of Madrid.
