Group A Outlook: Who Can Advance in the 2026 World Cup?

Group A Standings and Latest Results

After a week of action in the FIFA 2026 World Cup, every team in Group A has played once. The group currently looks like this heading into the next matches:

Recent Matches Update

On Thursday, Czechia and South Africa played to a 1-1 draw. Mexico edged out South Korea 1-0, which secured Mexico's spot at the top of Group A. South Korea still controls its fate for advancing.

Upcoming Games in Group A

  • Wednesday, June 24: South Africa vs. South Korea
  • Wednesday, June 24: Czechia vs. Mexico

What Lies Ahead for Each Team?

Mexico

Leading Group A with six points and a +3 goal difference, Mexico can confirm first place by beating South Korea if Czechia fails to beat South Africa. However, if Czechia wins their match, Mexico's top spot is not guaranteed despite a victory over South Korea.

South Korea

South Korea has a chance to claim the group's top spot if they defeat Mexico and South Africa loses or draws with Czechia. A win against Mexico would set them up to face a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32.

South Africa

South Africa faces elimination unless they improve results fast. Losing to Czechia while South Korea avoids defeat against Mexico would knock South Africa out. Even winning their last game might not be enough due to tiebreakers.

Czechia

Czechia shares a precarious position similar to South Africa’s. A loss to South Africa combined with Mexico avoiding defeat against South Korea would end Czechia’s hopes of moving on.

Tiebreaker Rules Explained

If teams tie on points after group play, the following criteria are applied:

  • Points earned in matches among the tied teams
  • Goal difference in those matches
  • Goals scored in those matches

If still tied, the process extends to all group matches considering overall goal difference, total goals scored, and finally team conduct (yellow/red cards). FIFA rankings serve as the last resort.

This means head-to-head results carry significant weight. For instance, if Mexico beats South Korea but Czechia beats South Africa, Mexico and Czechia would both have six points. Since Czechia would have won their direct match against Mexico, they would top the group despite equal points.
