Guglielmo Vicario Joins Juventus on Loan from Tottenham
Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is heading back to Italy, with Juventus winning the race for his signature after Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark “here we go” confirmation.
The deal, agreed between the clubs, will see Vicario join Juve on loan with an option to buy rather than an obligation. It suits everyone: Juventus get flexibility, Spurs clear the way for change, and the 29-year-old gets the return to Serie A he has been pushing for.
Spurs move on from a difficult year
The writing had been on the wall for Vicario at Tottenham long before the agreement dropped. His season never really caught fire, and he became one of several underperformers in a campaign that saw Spurs flirt dangerously with disaster, only dodging relegation by two points on the final day.
His momentum disappeared completely in March when he underwent hernia surgery. That opened the door for Antonin Kinsky, who stepped in as Tottenham scrambled to drag themselves over the line. From that point, a summer exit for Vicario felt inevitable rather than surprising.
Juventus pivot from Martinez to Vicario
Juventus had initially set their sights on Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa. That pursuit collapsed, and the Bianconeri quickly turned their full attention to Vicario.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio detailed how quickly the move accelerated once Juve made that switch. He reported that Juventus “stepped up their game” after shelving the Martinez option, pushing the Vicario deal into its final stages with talks “continuing at a rapid pace” between the two clubs.
The structure was clear early on: a loan with an option to buy, a formula that works for Juventus’ finances and respects Tottenham’s position while matching the player’s desire to return to Serie A.
One telling sign of how advanced things had become came off the pitch. Vicario’s agent travelled to Turin initially to work on a deal for Jhon Lucumí, but used his time in the city to drive the goalkeeper negotiations forward directly with Juventus’ hierarchy. From there, the move gathered speed.
‘Here we go’ – and confirmation from all sides
Once Romano weighed in, the transfer moved from likely to locked in. Posting on X, he revealed: “Juventus agree deal to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham, here we go! Spurs accept loan proposal with buy option clause – not mandatory. Vicario wanted the move and leaves #THFC today. New goalkeeper for Juventus.”
David Ornstein of The Athletic backed that up, reporting that Tottenham had accepted Juventus’ bid – a loan with an option to buy next summer – and that all parties expect the signing of the Italy international to go through after Juve abandoned their chase for Martinez.
So Vicario leaves north London after a turbulent spell, swapping a relegation fight and a faltering Spurs project for the pressure cooker of Turin. Juventus get their new goalkeeper. Tottenham turn the page.
What Vicario does with this second chance in Serie A will define whether this move is remembered as a smart reset or a missed opportunity.
