Hansi Flick Details Why Rodri Remains on Barcelona Bench Amid Pedri Tactical Challenge
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has acknowledged that new midfield signing Rodri is not yet fit enough to start regularly in La Liga. The German manager revealed that the Spaniard is still adapting physically and tactically after his recent arrival from Manchester City.
Barcelona's Strong Start Despite Rodri's Substitute Role
The Catalan club continued their flawless league record with a thrilling 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou. Despite conceding first, Barcelona's attack, led by two goals each from Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, kept their perfect nine points from three matches.
Rodri, despite his high profile status, came off the bench again as he undergoes a gradual integration process focused on regaining peak fitness and fitting into Barcelona’s tactical framework.
Flick Emphasizes Physical Improvement Needed
“Obviously, he needs to improve physically,” Flick said plainly. “He has only been here for ten days. What matters to me is how we respond after conceding goals.”
The coach also pointed out defensive weaknesses exposed during quick counterattacks and set pieces, areas his squad must improve.
“We need better ball control, and we have to consider the opponent’s strengths too. They had fast players and were dangerous on corners. We must be much better in those moments.”
Tactical Balancing Act Between Rodri and Pedri
Beyond fitness, a bigger challenge lies in balancing Rodri alongside Pedri, the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner. Reports from El Nacional reveal Rodri recently met with Flick to discuss how they can share midfield duties without overlapping or reducing each other’s influence, an issue they’ve faced playing together for Spain.
Flick plans to assign clear roles: Rodri will anchor the midfield to maintain structure, while Pedri will roam freely between lines. Rodri is reportedly willing to adjust his natural attacking tendencies for the partnership to flourish.
Next Steps for Barcelona
With three wins secured, Barcelona prepare for a tough away match against Valencia at Mestalla this Sunday. Flick believes that once Rodri reaches full match fitness and the positional responsibilities are drilled in training, the duo of Rodri and Pedri could become one of Europe’s most dominant midfield partnerships.
The key will be Rodri’s smooth insertion into the starting lineup, crucial for Barcelona’s hopes to defend their La Liga title.
