João Cancelo Signs Permanent Barcelona Deal Until 2029
João Cancelo is a Barcelona player again – this time for the long haul.
The Portuguese full-back has joined Barça on a permanent transfer from Al Hilal, signing a three-year contract that ties him to the club until 2029. After two previous spells in blaugrana colours, he returns not as a short-term fix, but as a cornerstone for the next phase of the project.
“I’m ready to play,” Cancelo declared as he began his third stint at the club, underlining both his fitness and his eagerness to slot straight back into the side. Barcelona know exactly what they are getting: an aggressive, technically gifted full-back who can invert into midfield, drive attacks from deep and set the tempo down the flank.
This time, the context is different. Cancelo arrives in a squad already laced with youth and speed, expected to provide experience and structure on the right side of defence. His versatility – comfortable on either flank and in several tactical systems – makes him a key piece as Barça try to stabilise the squad and maintain a defined style over the next few seasons.
While the move from Al Hilal ends a short chapter in Saudi Arabia, it reopens one that both player and club clearly felt was unfinished in Catalonia. Cancelo’s words matched his body language: he is not easing into the season, he is pushing to start it at full throttle.
Around him, the club’s summer storylines keep building. Hamza Abdelkarim has emerged as the surprise name of preseason, finishing as Barça’s top scorer after netting again in the Festa del Gamper Estrella Damm. That goal took his tally to four in preseason, a statement return for the Egyptian forward in a squad where attacking minutes are fiercely contested.
The Gamper night also doubled as a showcase of the club’s new face at Spotify Camp Nou. Seven players made their home debuts in the traditional curtain-raiser, a clear sign of how much this squad has been refreshed. New signings Van Asten, McCamey, Martina and Kerolin posed with the Joan Gamper Trophy before the match against Brighton & Hove Albion, a symbolic photo that underlined their immediate integration into the group and the expectations that come with the shirt.
The women’s team, Barça Femení, have quietly set their leadership structure for the campaign as well. Patri Guijarro has been named first captain, supported by Marta Torrejón, Irene Paredes, Aitana Bonmatí and Caroline Graham. It is a captaincy group that blends long-serving figures with the current Ballon d’Or winner, a spine built to keep standards brutally high in a side already used to winning everything.
Beyond the Camp Nou orbit, the transfer market continues to twist. Atlético Madrid have agreed a sale of Julián to Arsenal, but the player has rejected the move. The situation has become strained enough for Atlético to describe it as untenable, yet they are still maintaining a firm veto on Barcelona as a destination for the forward nicknamed “Spider”. The stalemate adds another layer of tension to an already complex relationship between the clubs and leaves one of La Liga’s most intriguing attacking talents in limbo.
Looking further ahead, Barcelona’s planning board is already sketching out the future of the goalkeeping position. Croatian international Dominik Livakovic has emerged as a strong candidate for the 2027–28 season, viewed as an experienced option to act as backup to Joan Garcia. At 31, Livakovic fits the profile of a veteran presence who can support a younger first-choice keeper without blocking his development.
From Cancelo’s long-term commitment to the quiet groundwork for 2027, the message from Barcelona is clear: the rebuild is no longer about patching holes. It is about locking in pillars – on the touchline, in the dressing room and between the posts – and seeing how far this new core can push the club back towards the summit.
