Johan Manzambi: Bayern Munich Must Act Quickly
Thomas Müller has seen enough. From his vantage point as a Bayern Munich great, watching on as another World Cup talent announces himself on the biggest stage, he has a clear message for his old club: do not let Johan Manzambi slip away to England.
The 20-year-old Switzerland midfielder lit up SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Thursday, coming off the bench to score twice in a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the other side of the world, recruitment departments at Europe’s biggest clubs will have taken note. Some already had.
Manchester United, deep in the process of rebuilding their midfield after Casemiro’s departure and with Manuel Ugarte expected to follow him out, have been tracking Manzambi for months. TEAMtalk sources have confirmed the Freiburg man has been scouted by United, who are already preparing to welcome £35million signing Ederson Silva to Old Trafford this summer and remain active for at least one more midfielder.
United’s shopping list is long and ambitious. They are still in the race for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes despite Tottenham’s fresh interest. Real Madrid, for their part, are understood to be softening their stance over a possible sale of Aurelien Tchouameni, a player admired at both Old Trafford and Anfield. Reports in Italy also link United with Croatia and Como’s Martin Baturina, who caught the eye with a goal against England in his country’s World Cup opener.
Amid all that noise, Manzambi has cut through with something more powerful than a rumour: performance.
Last season, he emerged as one of Freiburg’s standout players in the Bundesliga, contributing five goals and four assists from midfield. That blend of end product and industry has already drawn interest from several clubs, with Arsenal joining United in monitoring his progress as far back as March.
Now Müller wants Bayern to move from admiration to action.
Müller’s call to Bayern
Having watched Manzambi torment Bosnia and Herzegovina, Müller, a 33-time trophy winner in Bavaria, used his platform on MagentaTV to send a pointed nudge in the direction of Bayern’s hierarchy.
“He’s a good player overall. We’ve had him on our list for a while now,” Müller said. “For me, he’s someone, and now we can make a headline, that FC Bayern should also consider.
“You can sense his flexibility. You can also sense his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his actions, in his decision-making, his work ethic.
“He’s now in Freiburg in a team where they really work hard. I think his development is very, very good.
“He’s a player who can play as No.6, he can play as No.8, he can play as No.10. He wears number nine on his back, so maybe we could also market him as a striker!”
It is classic Müller: a touch of humour wrapped around a serious footballing point. Bayern’s midfield has been in flux, and when a club legend publicly highlights a versatile, hard-running, technically sharp 20-year-old already thriving in the Bundesliga, the message is hard to miss. Sign him before someone else does. Before Manchester United do.
A World Cup brace that changes the conversation
Manzambi’s night in Los Angeles felt like a turning point. Thrown on from the bench, he didn’t just add energy; he changed the game’s temperature. Two goals, both taken with the confidence of a player who believes he belongs at this level, turned a solid Swiss performance into a statement win.
“Honestly, it’s incredible, it’s the first brace of my career, and at the World Cup on top of that,” Manzambi said afterwards. “Scoring two goals in front of the fans and my family, that’s very, very nice. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep tonight.”
Those are the words of a young man still pinching himself. His football tells a different story: composed, assured, already carrying the habits of a seasoned professional. Freiburg’s demanding environment has sharpened his work rate and decision-making; international football is now showcasing the results.
For United, who are trying to reshape their midfield into something more dynamic, more aggressive and more modern, Manzambi fits the profile. For Arsenal, always on the lookout for intelligent, multi-functional midfielders, he is an obvious name to keep on the radar. For Bayern, he is on the doorstep, proven in their league, and now endorsed by one of the most decorated players in their history.
Müller has thrown down the gauntlet. The question now is whether Bayern pick it up, or whether Old Trafford – or another European heavyweight – becomes the stage on which Johan Manzambi’s rise truly accelerates.
