Julian Alvarez's Future at Arsenal: Latest Developments
Julian Alvarez remains at the heart of Arsenal’s transfer plans, and the saga around his future has taken another turn.
Arteta on the phone as Alvarez weighs Emirates switch
Mikel Arteta has spoken directly with the Atletico Madrid forward about a move to the Emirates Stadium, according to reports from Spain. Diario AS claim the Arsenal manager has been in contact with Alvarez as the club explore a summer deal for the Argentine.
From Madrid, the message is the same: Alvarez is open to joining Arsenal.
His situation at Atletico has grown tense. He was left out of their La Liga opener against Malaga, with Diego Simeone admitting the player was not in the right frame of mind to feature. The decision only fuelled speculation that a move before the deadline is very much on the table.
Alvarez has long been linked with Barcelona and is understood to view Camp Nou as his ideal destination. Atletico, though, have been reluctant to strengthen a direct rival and have so far resisted doing business with the Catalan club. That stance has kept Arsenal firmly in the conversation, even if they are not his first choice.
The atmosphere around him at Atletico is turning sour. Alvarez was whistled by sections of his own support during the club’s opening league fixture of the new campaign, a pointed reaction that underlined the growing disconnect between player and fans.
Pressed on the forward’s future after those hostilities, Simeone chose his words carefully. “We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had,” he said. “And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline.”
No guarantees. No clarity. Just a manager leaving the door open to change.
Arsenal still building after statement summer
While Alvarez’s future hangs in the balance, Arsenal’s summer rebuild has been anything but hesitant.
Arteta has already reshaped his squad with several high-profile additions. Ezri Konsa became the latest arrival, completing a £51million move from Aston Villa to reinforce a defensive unit hit by injuries.
The marquee signing, though, is Bruno Guimaraes. The £75million capture of the Newcastle United captain sent a message across the division, adding power and control to a midfield already boasting quality. Piero Hincapie also joined permanently from Bayer Leverkusen after last season’s loan, while Christos Tzolis has been added to Arteta’s attacking options.
Arteta made it clear even before Arsenal began their Premier League title defence that he was not done.
Speaking about Konsa’s arrival, he laid bare the logic behind the deal and the wider recruitment drive.
“We needed one more player, we had seven players in the defensive line, we know that that's not enough,” he said. “We have two long-term injuries, one with Jurrien (Timber), and one with Willy (Saliba).
“And we wanted someone that didn't have the qualities that we already have, so somebody ideally with experience, because as a centre-back in this league you cannot play jokes, we know how important that position is, and I think Ezri brings a lot of qualities that we needed.”
The message is unmistakable: Arsenal intend to go deep again in every competition, and squad depth will not be left to chance.
Champions start strong as Alvarez watch continues
On the pitch, the champions have already set a familiar tone. Arsenal opened their title defence with a controlled 3-0 win over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all on the scoresheet.
It was the kind of routine, ruthless home performance that has become a hallmark under Arteta. A reminder of why players like Alvarez are being targeted: this is a team built to compete at the very top, and still hungry for more.
As the window ticks towards its close, Arsenal have their squad largely in place, their season up and running, and their manager openly pushing for one last piece.
The question now is simple: will Julian Alvarez be the final statement in a summer that already feels like a declaration of intent?
