Kevin Amaro Joins Genk: South American Full-Back Signing
Genk have dipped into South America again – and they’re not hiding how big they think this one could be.
The Belgian Pro League side have confirmed the signing of Uruguay international Kevin Amaro, a 22-year-old right-back who arrives from Liverpool Montevideo on a five-year deal. It’s a long commitment and a clear signal: Genk believe they’ve found their next South American success story on the flanks.
Another Latin American full-back bet
Genk know this market well. They built a reputation for spotting full-backs early, polishing them, then watching them explode on bigger stages. Daniel Muñoz is the obvious reference point: signed from Colombia, turned into a standout in Belgium, and now a European trophy winner with Crystal Palace.
Amaro walks straight into that narrative. Young, aggressive, versatile, and already an international, he fits the profile almost perfectly.
From Montevideo to Europe
Amaro made his debut for Liverpool in the 2022 season, but his real breakthrough came in 2024. That year he forced his way into the side and stayed there, racking up 42 appearances and scoring once.
He backed it up in 2025: 34 games, one goal again, consistency rather than a one-off surge. This season he had already played 17 times for Liverpool before Genk moved in, a sign he was no fringe player but a key piece on the right.
Crucially, he’s not just a classic full-back. Amaro can operate anywhere down the right flank, from traditional defender to more advanced wide role, giving Genk tactical flexibility and depth in one signing. His form in Uruguay has already earned him a handful of caps for the national team, underlining the level at which he’s been performing.
A timely boost for Genk
Genk have started the new Belgian Pro League campaign with one win and one defeat, a mixed opening that hints at potential but also at areas to sharpen. Amaro’s arrival should immediately strengthen the right side, whether he’s asked to lock down his flank or drive it forward.
The club have seen this movie before with Latin American full-backs. Now the question is simple: can Kevin Amaro be the next to turn a move to Genk into a launchpad for something even bigger?
