Liverpool Enters New Financial Era with Bezos Consortium
Liverpool have taken a dramatic step into a new financial era, with a heavyweight consortium featuring Amazon founder Jeff Bezos securing a sizeable stake in the club.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has sold close to 40% of Liverpool to 1892 Holdings, a new investment vehicle named after the year the club was formed. Early suggestions put the deal at roughly a third of the club, but the stake is actually around 38%, as first detailed by The Athletic.
This is no simple cash injection. Built into the agreement is an option for the consortium to move to a controlling stake within the next 12 months. Crucially, that clause gives 1892 Holdings the right, but not the obligation, to take charge, leaving the door open to a full takeover without locking either side into a formal commitment just yet.
On Friday, FSG announced it had entered into a “definitive agreement” for what it called a “strategic minority investment” from 1892 Holdings. The language matters: FSG remain in control, but they have invited serious power to the table.
Leadership of 1892 Holdings
At the head of the group is British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia, a millionaire with deep roots in football boardrooms. Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, spent 18 years as a director and co-owner at Queens Park Rangers before stepping away and relinquishing his stake last month. He now moves from Loftus Road to Anfield, and into one of the most scrutinised roles in world football.
Pending regulatory approval, Bhatia will become Liverpool’s vice-chairman and take a seat on an expanded board. His arrival comes alongside two of the most recognisable names in global business: Bezos and billionaire Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, who are also part of the 1892 Holdings consortium.
For Liverpool, this is a clear signal. FSG are not walking away, but they are inviting unprecedented financial muscle into the club’s inner circle. For the new investors, the next 12 months will decide whether this is the start of a partnership — or the first step towards full control of one of football’s most storied institutions.
