Liverpool's Firm Stance on Bayern's Interest in Ngumoha
Liverpool’s hierarchy are understood to be furious over Bayern Munich’s reported move for Rio Ngumoha, a 17-year-old winger many inside Anfield view as central to the club’s future.
The storm has been brewing since last week, when The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed that the Bundesliga champions were “exploring a surprise move” for the teenager. Ngumoha, fresh from an eye-catching senior debut for England last Saturday, is said to be aware of Bayern’s “strong interest and intentions”.
What Bayern have not done, according to those reports, is go through Liverpool.
And that is where the temperature has risen on Merseyside.
‘Liverpool will be fuming’
Speaking to Football Insider, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown laid bare how the situation will be playing out behind the scenes at Anfield.
“Liverpool will be doing everything in their power to stop Ngumoha leaving,” he said. “They’ve already lost Salah, and this young lad has come into the team and made a splash.
“He’s obviously got great talent and they rate him very highly, so they need look no further than the options they’ve already got available, because he already looks like he’s ready to come in and play a regular part in the side.”
Then came the pointed part.
“I was always under the impression that approaching players without the club’s knowledge was illegal, but it always seems to happen and to be allowed to happen. Of course, these things happen, but it’s not usually as out in the open as this has been, and that’s not going to go down well.
“I have no doubt Liverpool will be fuming, because their best talents are being approached by clubs like Bayern Munich and they have no knowledge of it. Liverpool are not going to let that happen, they’re not going to let him go, and especially not to Bayern Munich now that this has happened.”
The message is clear: Liverpool feel their territory is being encroached upon, and they are ready to dig in.
Not for sale – and needed now more than ever
Internally, Liverpool have been adamant: Ngumoha is not for sale under any circumstances. Not this summer. Not while he is on this trajectory.
The winger’s impact at first-team level, at just 17, has sharpened that stance. Those close to the club see a player with the tools to become genuinely elite, and that kind of profile is exactly what Liverpool want to build around, not cash in on.
The timing of Bayern’s interest only intensifies the situation. Mohamed Salah has gone. Hugo Ekitike is sidelined for months. The forward line, once overflowing with options, suddenly looks thin.
In that context, the idea of selling a gifted teenager who wears the no.73 and already looks capable of handling senior football is not just unlikely. It is, as some around the club see it, absurd.
Liverpool need Ngumoha on the pitch, not on a plane to Munich.
Iraola’s youth blueprint
There is also the Andoni Iraola factor. The new Liverpool head coach has a strong reputation for trusting youth and has publicly committed to doing the same at Anfield.
That is music to Ngumoha’s ears – and a problem for Bayern.
Under Iraola, the pathway for a young attacker is clear: perform, and you play. With the Premier League and Champions League on the horizon next season, there is every expectation that the 17-year-old will see plenty of minutes if he continues to deliver.
For a teenager, that kind of platform at a club of Liverpool’s stature is powerful leverage against any overtures from abroad, no matter how glamorous the badge.
Bayern’s move only stiffens Liverpool’s spine
If Bayern hoped a quiet approach might unsettle Ngumoha, the effect may prove the opposite. The suggestion that the German champions have tested the waters without Liverpool’s knowledge has only hardened attitudes in the Anfield boardroom.
Merseyside chiefs were already determined to keep him. Now, with the manner of this pursuit under scrutiny, their stance looks immovable.
Ngumoha is emerging, Liverpool are short in attack, and a new coach is ready to build around youth. Bayern may have picked the wrong moment to knock on this particular door.
