Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: Negotiations Heat Up

Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola has moved from background noise to the brink of a seismic deal, with Paris Saint-Germain’s transfer dominoes finally beginning to fall.

The France international is Liverpool’s clear first-choice target for the wing this summer. Barcola has already made it known he wants Anfield. The project appeals, the club appeals, and, according to those close to the talks, personal terms are not expected to be a stumbling block.

The problem is the price.

A fee to shake the market

PSG, fresh from back-to-back Champions League triumphs and under no financial pressure to sell, have planted their flag at a staggering €170m (£145m). That figure would obliterate Liverpool’s own spending records and reset the ceiling for wide forwards in the Premier League.

Liverpool, for their part, are ready to push deeper than they ever have before. They are prepared to go beyond the British-record £125m they paid for Alexander Isak last summer. But there is a line they will not cross, and it does not reach £145m. An opening offer is being drawn up, yet the gap between intention and PSG’s demand remains stark.

That is the heart of the negotiation. Not the player’s enthusiasm. Not the contract length or salary. Just the number.

PSG’s winger chain reaction

For weeks, PSG have made one condition clear: Barcola leaves only when two new wingers walk through the door. Until then, he stays.

That condition is now close to being met.

On Friday, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported that PSG are set to sign Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco in a €50m deal. Akliouche, who had other options on the table, has prioritised Paris and is viewed as a numerical replacement for Kang-in Lee. His medical is not yet scheduled, but the agreement is in place and the direction of travel is obvious.

On Saturday morning, Fabrizio Romano put his stamp on it with his trademark confirmation. Akliouche to PSG: fee agreed at €50m, contract until June 2031, medical pencilled in for next week. One winger in. One condition closer to being met.

PSG are not stopping there. Romano then revealed that Mika Godts has given the green light to the PSG project. Ajax are holding out for around €60m, official talks between the clubs are ongoing, and Godts is ready to accept personal terms if the two sides close the gap. Inside the French champions’ offices, there is optimism that a deal can be done.

If Akliouche is effectively secured and Godts follows, PSG will have their two wingers. At that point, the door for Barcola no longer just creaks open; it swings wide.

Behind the scenes, the lines of communication are busy. Romano, speaking in the early hours of Saturday, outlined the current state of play: contacts are ongoing between Liverpool, PSG and Barcola’s representatives.

Everyone knows the sticking point. The fee.

Liverpool are convinced Barcola fits. The club’s hierarchy see a forward who can grow into the role, who has the technical edge and athletic profile to thrive in the Premier League and in Europe. Barcola, for his part, is described as “very keen” and “excited” by the prospect of joining. Personal terms are expected to follow once the clubs get close on a figure.

But “close” is doing a lot of work here. PSG have already lost several attacking players this summer and are juggling multiple deals at once. They want to complete their incoming business, secure their replacements, and still emerge with a statement price for one of their most important young forwards.

So the dance continues. Liverpool will bid. PSG will push back. The Merseyside club must decide just how far they are willing to stretch their financial model for a player they believe can define their next attacking era.
