Liverpool's Last-Minute Loan Attempt for Chelsea’s Malo Gusto Falls Through

On transfer deadline day, Liverpool tried to secure a loan deal for Chelsea's right-back Malo Gusto, but the clubs couldn't agree on terms. The Merseyside side aimed to strengthen their defense temporarily, but Chelsea insisted on a permanent transfer, causing negotiations to collapse.

Deadline Day Negotiations Hit Financial Snag

Journalist Fabrice Hawkins reported that Liverpool made a last-minute effort to bring in the 23-year-old defender to add depth and competition under coach Andoni Iraola. Despite their interest, the two Premier League rivals failed to settle on the deal's structure. Liverpool wanted a straightforward loan with no purchase obligation, while Chelsea pushed for a permanent sale.

Throughout the summer, Liverpool have kept things quiet but did sign Jeremy Jacquet, Victor Munoz, Ronald Araujo, and Bradley Barcola before the window shut.

Chelsea’s Valuation Blocks Loan Move

Chelsea valued Gusto near £75 million earlier this summer after interest from Manchester City. The London club was not open to a temporary transfer and demanded a full sale. For Liverpool, that price was beyond reach, especially given their other financial commitments this summer.

The disagreement over the deal’s nature ended any chance of Gusto moving to Anfield. Chelsea made it clear they would only allow a departure if it came with a hefty long-term financial commitment.

Xabi Alonso Keeps Faith in Gusto

With the transfer off the table, Gusto stays at Stamford Bridge where manager Xabi Alonso trusts him as a key player. The French defender started in both recent Premier League wins against Fulham and Brighton and featured in the Carabao Cup victory over Luton.

Known for his athleticism, Gusto fits well into Alonso’s tactics and is expected to start again when Chelsea face reigning champions Arsenal in the Premier League.

What's Next for Liverpool?

After missing out on Gusto, Liverpool will rely on their current defensive roster for the season's first half. Coach Iraola counts on Jeremie Frimpong as his primary right-back. He also hopes Conor Bradley recovers soon from a knee injury sustained in January, especially as fixtures pile up with league and European matches.
