Manchester United Eyes Aurelien Tchouameni for Midfield Rebuild

Manchester United’s pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni has moved into sharper focus, with wage demands no longer viewed as a barrier – and Chelsea’s own transfer plans potentially helping to open the door.

United have identified the Real Madrid midfielder as their ideal long-term successor to Casemiro as they piece together a major rebuild in the centre of the pitch. A £35million deal for Atalanta’s Ederson is already in place, but that is only one part of a wider overhaul that could see as many as three new midfielders arrive before next season.

Inside Carrington, the plan is clear: hand Michael Carrick a midfield capable of competing with the best in Europe. Targets are lined up accordingly. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott is on the list as an alternative to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who is being strongly courted by Tottenham. For the No 6 role, United are weighing Tchouameni against Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

Tchouameni's Priority Status

On Monday, Fabrizio Romano underlined that Tchouameni is a priority target, while warning that his current salary at Madrid could complicate any move. That concern has been quickly eased.

Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed that United are ready to go big on the Frenchman’s pay packet and make him one of the club’s top earners.

“Tchouameni’s wages are not an issue in my opinion,” Jacobs told The United Stand. “Manchester United would be prepared to make a player like that one of their top earners.

“They’re not in that territory of £300,000 [per week] Rashford, Sancho-type wages, but nor is Tchouameni by the way.

“So I’m not aware that personal terms with Tchouameni would be a problem.”

With the salary hurdle largely cleared, attention turns to Madrid – and to Chelsea.

Jacobs outlined how a potential Real Madrid move for Enzo Fernandez could become a decisive factor in United’s chase for Tchouameni. The European champions are expected to add at least one more midfielder, and how they fund that signing could shape Tchouameni’s future.

“The challenge is, what midfielder do Real sign? Is it in Tchouameni’s position? Even if it isn’t, do they bring in enough funds elsewhere, or do they need one big sale to make a play at Enzo Fernandez?” Jacobs said.

“Jose Mourinho has said he wants Enzo Fernandez, and this is why talks are expected to begin between Chelsea and Real Madrid.

“So I doubt Man Utd would be walking away from a prospective Tchouameni deal [based] on wages.

“I think they would hold some optimism that if the player genuinely becomes available, it’s a viable move.”

Madrid, for their part, are confident about landing Fernandez, a stance that could ripple through the market and hand encouragement not only to United but also to Liverpool, who have tracked Tchouameni before.

United know the scale of the investment required. An offer in the region of £70m will be needed to tempt Madrid into negotiations. For a club intent on rebuilding its spine – and for a player widely regarded as one of the elite defensive midfielders in world football – that figure is being viewed at Old Trafford as a price worth paying if the door finally swings open.
