Manchester United Set to Bid for Lewis Hall Amid Newcastle's Struggles

Manchester United are preparing to test Newcastle United’s resolve with an opening bid for Lewis Hall in what is set to be their most expensive signing of the summer, with Fabrizio Romano stating the move has been “approved” inside Old Trafford.

The timing is brutal for Newcastle. A year of sales has stripped away much of the core that powered their recent resurgence. Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have all gone. Bruno Guimaraes is edging towards Arsenal, with the Brazilian understood to want the move and negotiations between the clubs progressing.

Eddie Howe has already walked away, the steady drain of talent among the factors behind his decision. Now, as Newcastle try to rebuild with a raft of young, largely untested recruits from outside the Premier League, another of their most prized assets is under threat.

United circle as Newcastle bleed talent

Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, underlined how firmly Hall is on United’s radar.

“Many questions on Lewis Hall and Manchester United. I already told you this in June and I stand by my information,” he said. “Man Utd really appreciate Lewis Hall and Man Utd consider Lewis Hall as an ideal player they would like to add to their squad. So, Lewis Hall is on the Manchester United list, for sure, and he’s a player internally approved at Manchester United.”

Hall, Newcastle’s starting left-back, fits the profile United have been chasing: young, technically secure, and capable of growing into a long‑term solution in a problem position. Internally, he is viewed as a top target.

The admiration is clear. The path to a deal is anything but.

Romano stressed that Newcastle are in no mood to lose another cornerstone of their XI.

“My understanding is that Newcastle will make their life complicated. Newcastle don’t want to sell Lewis Hall,” he said. “Newcastle already made big money this summer from Tonali, Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes… He (Guimaraes) is expected to join Arsenal this summer.

“We have to wait for the club-to-club agreement but the deal is moving in the right direction. Bruno wants to go to Arsenal.

“So, Newcastle wants to keep Lewis Hall and Newcastle don’t want to sell the player. That’s the indication, that’s the message.”

The stance is defiant. The reality is harsh. Newcastle have already cashed in heavily and, with Guimaraes likely to follow, the pressure to draw a line somewhere is obvious. Hall looks like that line.

A £60m test of resolve

United, though, are not backing away. Romano confirmed that the club are already in contact to gauge Newcastle’s position.

“Man Utd are having some contacts to understand the situation of Lewis Hall? Yes, for sure,” he said. “But then there is Newcastle and so before saying Man Utd are going to try all in, we have to understand Newcastle stance and Newcastle position.

“It’s going to be a story to follow, for sure, because Man Utd are not done in the market. That’s clear. They did their stuff in June, July but they’re not done in the market and now we are August.”

TEAMtalk insider Graeme Bailey reported on July 30 that United’s opening bid is already being drafted. Newcastle value Hall at around £60m, a figure that would make him United’s biggest outlay of the window.

At that price, Hall would leapfrog Andrey Santos, who arrived for a package worth £50m (£48m plus £2m in add-ons), as the club’s most expensive summer signing.

For United, it would be a statement: heavy money on a Premier League‑ready full-back, internally endorsed, seen as a key part of the rebuild.

For Newcastle, it would be something else entirely. After a summer of departures and a manager gone, can they really afford to lose the player they have identified as their long-term left-back – or is this the moment they finally say no and risk turning away a huge fee?

One way or another, Lewis Hall is about to become a defining name in both clubs’ summers.
