Manchester United Pursue Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Replacement
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is starting to take shape, and the next piece they want already knows Manchester all too well.
Felix Nmecha, once a promising academy talent across town at Manchester City, has emerged as a serious target for United as they search for a long-term replacement for Casemiro. Reports in Germany say United are firmly in the race for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, whose form at the World Cup has pushed him into the spotlight.
The 25-year-old announced himself on the global stage with a ruthless finish for Germany in their 7-1 demolition of Curacao, lashing a first-time right-footed strike into the top corner from 20 yards. It was the sort of goal that turns heads. His performance didn’t stop there: he drove from box to box, broke up counters and dictated transitions, the kind of all-court display that top clubs crave in the modern game.
Nmecha’s path to this point has been anything but straightforward. He came through the ranks at Manchester City, only to leave in 2021 for Wolfsburg after catching the eye during a loan spell at Anderlecht. From there, his rise has been steady rather than spectacular, but Dortmund saw enough to tie him down on a long-term deal and hand him a central role in their midfield.
Now the prospect of a return to Manchester is back on the table – only this time in red.
Sky Sports Deutschland reports that United are one of several heavyweights tracking Nmecha. The twist? City, his former club and United’s neighbours, are also credited with an interest, setting up the possibility of a rare transfer tug-of-war across the city divide.
They are not alone. Real Madrid are understood to be in the frame as well, with returning coach Jose Mourinho reportedly an admirer of Nmecha’s profile. A midfielder who can shield, surge and score is a valuable commodity, and his World Cup performances have only sharpened that perception.
Dortmund, though, hold the cards. The Bundesliga club are relaxed about his future, protected by a contract that runs until 2030. Built into that deal is a release clause set at £61m, but that only becomes active in the summer of 2027. The message from Dortmund is clear: they are planning around Nmecha for the medium term, not preparing to cash in immediately.
The stance from the player’s camp backs that up. Speaking to Bild, Nmecha’s agent Tobi Alabi underlined their current position, stressing that the midfielder still has two years left on his deal and that they “fully respect” it. Alabi highlighted Dortmund’s importance in Nmecha’s development, describing the club as a key platform and emphasising the gratitude felt for the trust shown.
He acknowledged the inevitable attention that comes with strong performances, noting that interest and questions about the future are “part of top-level football” and a sign of Nmecha’s progress. Yet the line from the camp is firm: the focus, for now, is on giving everything for Dortmund, fighting for the club and helping the team hit its targets.
For United, that creates a familiar challenge. They see a player who fits the profile of the next phase of their midfield – athletic, tactically disciplined, capable in both directions – but they are dealing with a club in no rush to sell and a contract built to deter opportunistic bids.
All of this comes as United close in on another major midfield signing. They are on the verge of confirming a £39m move for Atalanta and Brazil midfielder Ederson, who is expected to complete his medical duties while away with his national team at the World Cup. That deal would add bite and energy to the centre of the pitch, but the search to replace Casemiro’s presence and experience continues.
Nmecha ticks many of the boxes: Premier League roots, Champions League exposure, international pedigree and the kind of physical and technical blend that suits the pace of English football. The question is not whether he is on United’s radar. It is whether they are willing – or able – to prise him away from a Dortmund project that still sees him as central to its future.
