Manchester United's Squad Reset: Sancho, Malacia, and Casemiro Depart

Manchester United confirmed a significant changing of the guard on Wednesday, with Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro all leaving the club at the end of their contracts.

Three big names. Three very different stories. One clear message: this squad is being reset.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho’s departure brings a subdued end to a move that once carried the weight of a new era. Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73million and billed as the marquee wide man United had chased for years, the England international never truly settled at Old Trafford.

He leaves having made just 83 appearances for the club, his United career increasingly defined by what happened away from Manchester. Sancho spent last season on loan at Aston Villa after previous temporary returns to Dortmund and a spell at Chelsea, and he now steps into free agency with links back to both Dortmund and Villa already circling.

Tyrell Malacia

For Malacia, the story is one of promise interrupted. The Dutch full-back arrived from Feyenoord in 2022 and quickly showed flashes of aggression and energy down the left, enough to suggest he could push for a long-term starting role. But injuries bit hard. Across two seasons he managed only 50 appearances, his momentum repeatedly stalled just as he looked ready to establish himself.

Casemiro

Then there is Casemiro, the serial winner who brought steel and stature to United’s midfield. The Brazilian, currently at the World Cup with his country, spent four seasons at Old Trafford after his high-profile switch from Real Madrid. He racked up 160 games and scored 26 goals, often carrying responsibility in the heart of the pitch during some turbulent campaigns.

His exit, already signposted earlier this summer, now sits on the same retained list that quietly closes the chapter on Sancho and Malacia as well. United’s announcement was formal, the club thanking all three for their contributions and wishing them well for the future, but the implications run deeper than polite farewell lines.

These are not fringe academy departures. They are high-investment, first-team names walking away for nothing, underlining both the scale of the rebuild and the ruthlessness now required to push the club forward.

Old Trafford has seen plenty of stars come and go. The question now is whether the space created by Sancho, Malacia and Casemiro’s exits becomes the launchpad for a sharper, more coherent United – or another reminder of opportunities missed.
