Manchester United Target Manu Kone After Tchouameni Setback

Manchester United’s ideal Casemiro successor has slipped away. The response from Old Trafford has been swift: change target, not ambition.

Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni, long viewed inside United as the “dream” holding midfielder, has agreed a new contract with the Spanish giants after talks with incoming coach Jose Mourinho. Any lingering hope that Madrid might cash in to fund another marquee midfield signing has evaporated with that decision.

United had sensed an opening. There was a growing belief that Madrid could be tempted into a sale, especially with their name linked to the likes of Rodri and Enzo Fernandez. Instead, Tchouameni has doubled down on life in the capital, reaffirming his status as the man to anchor Mourinho’s second Bernabeu era.

Behind the scenes, there is a feeling that Tchouameni’s agent – who also represents Manu Kone – used United’s interest as leverage to secure a stronger deal for his client. Even so, well-placed voices insist a transfer was genuinely on the table if Madrid had chosen to move him on.

They didn’t. So United have pivoted.

From Madrid to Rome

With Tchouameni off the market, attention has turned firmly to Kone, the Roma midfielder who shared France’s World Cup stage with his more celebrated compatriot. The shared representation has smoothed the conversation; if United were talking Tchouameni with the agent, Kone’s name was always going to follow.

According to TEAMtalk, United are now “plotting a move” for the 25-year-old after being informed of Roma’s £50 million valuation. For a club under new INEOS control and determined to reshape Michael Carrick’s midfield, that figure is significant but not prohibitive.

Roma’s situation is driving the opportunity. Despite a strong Serie A campaign capped by a comfortable third-place finish and Champions League qualification, I Giallorossi must sell to stay on the right side of UEFA’s financial regulations. Internally, Kone is viewed as their most valuable saleable asset, the player who can bring in a sizeable fee without tearing up the entire project.

Intermediaries have already been busy. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been sounded out as potential destinations, the English market clearly the priority hunting ground.

Premier League fit

Kone, for his part, is understood to be open to a Premier League move and, as previously reported by The Peoples Person, “very keen” on joining United specifically. On paper, the fit is obvious.

He is a physical, combative midfielder who relishes duels, yet carries the ball with real purpose and stride. At 6'1", he brings presence as well as mobility, a profile tailor-made for the speed and physical demands of English football. United, who have lacked a consistent blend of power, athleticism and composure at the base of midfield, see those attributes as central to the next phase of their rebuild.

His performances at the World Cup only sharpened that interest. Kone’s campaign on the international stage is said to have “enhanced his growing reputation,” with scouts across Europe taking note of the way he combined athleticism with clean technical work in tight spaces.

A familiar logic

One moment from that tournament underlines why United’s recruitment team are so drawn to him. In France’s 3-0 group-stage win over Iraq, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, who missed out with an adductor problem. Didier Deschamps turned to Kone as the like-for-like replacement in the holding role.

United have effectively followed the same logic. If Kone is trusted by France to stand in for Tchouameni, why shouldn’t he be trusted to do the same in Manchester?

TEAMtalk also report that INEOS have been made aware of Eduardo Camavinga’s potential availability from Madrid, another high-profile name with Champions League pedigree. Yet the preference, at this stage, is said to be Kone as a “serious option” to reinforce Carrick’s engine room.

Tchouameni has chosen Madrid. United now have a clear decision of their own: pay the price for Kone and reshape the heart of their midfield, or risk watching another long-term target slip away into someone else’s project.
