Manchester United’s long courtship of Aurelien Tchouameni is drifting towards another dead end, and this time the damage may be coming from an old rival in Catalonia rather than the Bernabeu boardroom.

United have tracked Tchouameni for months, making their interest known back in April and running detailed background checks on the 26‑year‑old Real Madrid midfielder. The plan was simple: if Madrid ever cracked the door open, United wanted to be first in the queue.

Tchouameni has already agreed terms on a new five‑year deal at the Bernabeu, and Real have shown no appetite to cash in on a player they see as central to their next cycle. Rodri, who has a new contract offer on the table at City, has never hidden the appeal of a return to Spain. Manchester Evening News reports that City, while reluctant to lose their midfield metronome, will not block his exit if a buying club pays what they believe he is worth.

Barcelona’s first attempt did not come close.

On Friday, they lodged an offer worth €45m (£38m) plus add‑ons, according to The Athletic. City’s stance is firm: they want in excess of £60m. The gap is significant, but Barca’s intent is clear, and that is enough to send ripples across the market.

If Barcelona eventually convince City to sell, Madrid’s need for a high‑end holding midfielder eases. If they fail, the prospect of Real going anywhere near Tchouameni’s exit button all but vanishes. Either way, the latest developments around Rodri push United’s long‑shot pursuit of the Frenchman even further into the realms of fantasy.

Barca pain twice for United

For United, Barcelona’s manoeuvres sting on more than one level.

The Catalan club already handed them a financial setback by walking away from Marcus Rashford. After a successful loan spell last season, Barca had an option to sign the forward permanently for £26m. They chose not to trigger it.

That refusal denied United a straightforward opportunity to bank a significant fee at a time when every pound matters. Those funds could have been recycled into the midfield rebuild that has already seen £85m spent on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans last month.

Now Barca are circling Rodri, a move that indirectly squeezes United’s room to operate in the elite holding‑midfield bracket. One transfer decision cost them income. The next may cost them a dream target.
