Marc Cucurella's Rapid Move to Real Madrid

Marc Cucurella didn’t so much choose Real Madrid as get swept up by it.

The Spanish international has revealed that his move to the Bernabeu was sealed at such speed that there was barely time to weigh up the other badges on the table. Barcelona were there. Atletico Madrid too. On paper, it was a decision to agonise over. In reality, it was done in little more than a day.

“It all happened in a day and a half or two,” he told El Mundo, describing an operation that cut through the usual transfer noise and second‑guessing. No drawn‑out saga, no brinkmanship. Just a call from Real Madrid and a career-altering choice that, in his mind, was never really a choice at all.

“For me it was much better that way – much quicker, with no headaches,” he said.

When Madrid call

Cucurella, officially unveiled as a Real Madrid player this summer, walks into a squad being reshaped under Jose Mourinho, who wanted reinforcement at left-back and made the former Chelsea defender one of the few priority positions to address.

Other options existed. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid had both been tracking him, aware that his future was in play. He listened, he admits, but only up to a point.

“At the end of the day, playing for Real Madrid is an honour and not many players can say that, so I had no doubts whatsoever,” he explained. “I think both I and those around me – my family – were clear that this was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down, and I’m very happy with the decision we’ve made.”

The speed of the deal spared him the uncertainty that often engulfs high-profile transfers. No long summer of speculation, no drip-feed of rumours. Just a rapid agreement and a clear path to the Bernabeu.

From La Masia to the Bernabeu

What gives this move an extra edge is Cucurella’s past. He grew up in La Masia, schooled in Barcelona’s philosophy before forging his way elsewhere. Now he has crossed the divide to join the Catalan club’s greatest rivals.

It is the kind of twist that stirs emotions in both fanbases, but Cucurella framed it as a natural step in a career that has entered a new phase.

“Life has different stages. In this case, I’ve had to make an important decision and I have no doubts; I think it’s a huge step for me,” he said.

As a boy, he dreamed like so many others.

“When you’re a child, you dream of playing for the big clubs, and I think Real Madrid is one of them. It’s the team with the most Champions League titles in the world and I hope to win trophies with them and have a wonderful spell there.”

Ambition, not nostalgia, has guided him. The past is acknowledged, but the pull of the present – and the chance to compete for the biggest prizes in club football – has proved stronger.

Mourinho’s hand on the deal

Behind the scenes, Mourinho’s influence loomed large. The Portuguese coach identified Cucurella early and pushed to get the deal done quickly, giving the player clarity at a crucial moment.

“We had a chat and he told me he was really keen to work with me, that I’d settle in very well, and that Real Madrid was a great club,” Cucurella recalled.

The conversation was brief, but decisive. Mourinho made his intentions clear, then stepped back and let the club move.

“Then, that was it – he wished me all the best for the World Cup and said we’d see each other in Madrid.”

Reports have suggested Mourinho fought particularly hard for his signing, even to the point of issuing an ultimatum over the left-back position. Cucurella smiled that away.

“Did he say, ‘It’s either you or I won’t sign any left-back’? No, I don’t know if he said that,” he replied.

What he does know is that he arrives at Real Madrid with the coach’s backing, a starting point many players would envy. The move came together at breakneck speed, but the stakes are long term: a La Masia graduate, a former Chelsea defender, now entrusted with one of the most scrutinised positions in world football.

The decision took two days. The judgment on it will last far longer.
