Marcus Rashford's Barcelona Future Uncertain Amid Bernardo Silva Interest
Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona dream is hanging by a thread – and it may be Bernardo Silva, not Anthony Gordon or Julián Álvarez, who cuts it.
The England forward, on loan from Manchester United since the summer of 2025, has made it clear he wants to stay at Camp Nou. Barcelona, for their part, have liked what they’ve seen. But they do not like his price. The Spanish champions have no intention of activating the €30m (£26m) option in their agreement with United.
On its own, that left the door ajar. Now it’s being slammed shut from multiple directions.
Gordon in, Álvarez talks – and then Bernardo
Barcelona have already committed heavily on the flanks. Anthony Gordon is arriving from Newcastle United in a £69m (€80m) deal, another left-sided winger, another England international, another player who thrives in the very space Rashford wants to call home.
At the same time, Barça are deep in negotiations with Atlético Madrid for Julián Álvarez, a marquee attacking signing that could cost around €150m (£130m). The Argentine would reshape the forward line and swallow a huge chunk of the club’s remaining financial flexibility.
Those two moves alone make Rashford’s permanent stay complicated. But in Catalonia, attention is turning to a different name entirely.
According to Barcelona-based outlet Sport, Bernardo Silva has been “offered” to the club by his agent, Jorge Mendes. The Manchester City midfielder is set to leave the Premier League champions this summer and could arrive at Camp Nou as a free agent – a crucial distinction in a squad still wrestling with financial constraints.
Inside the club, the idea is gaining serious traction. Sport reports that Barcelona view Bernardo as a player still operating at an elite level, pointing to his performances for Pep Guardiola’s side this season. They see leadership, personality, and something Xavi – or whoever is on the bench – craves: versatility.
Bernardo can slot into midfield, knit play between the lines, or step out to the right wing. Crucially, he could offer cover and respite for Lamine Yamal, the teenage phenomenon who has carried a heavy load on that flank.
Barcelona know they are not alone. Sport claims Bernardo is “waiting for Barça” but also has an offer from Atlético Madrid – the very club Barcelona are negotiating with over Álvarez. The two operations are intertwined, politically and financially.
And this is where Rashford’s future gets squeezed.
The same report is blunt: if Bernardo Silva walks through the doors at Spotify Camp Nou, Rashford walks out. With Gordon already confirmed and Bernardo potentially arriving on a free, there is simply “no room in the squad” for the English winger.
A player who seemed to fit the Barcelona system, who “worked” in La Liga, could find himself surplus to requirements not because of form, but because the club see more value and flexibility elsewhere.
A London lifeline?
While Barcelona weigh up their options, the Premier League is watching. And in North London, one voice in particular has gone public.
TNT Sports presenter and Arsenal supporter Laura Woods has urged the Gunners to pounce if Rashford becomes available.
“I would love to see Rashford there!” she told talkSPORT. “For that amount of money, what was it? £26m or something like that.
“I don’t understand the difference there [compared to Anthony Gordon] in price tag. Marcus Rashford at Barcelona seemed to really work.
“You’re right, I’d kind of like to see him back in the Premier League as well.”
From an Arsenal perspective, the numbers are hard to ignore. In a market where Gordon is commanding £69m, a £26m fee for a player of Rashford’s pedigree and age would look like an opportunity, not a gamble. For Mikel Arteta, it would mean another high-level option across the front line, a wide forward who can also operate centrally and stretch defences in transition.
For Manchester United, it would mean a decision that once felt unthinkable: cashing in on an academy star whose trajectory has veered wildly between talismanic and troubled.
For Rashford himself, it would be a crossroads. Stay and fight for a place at a Barcelona side being rebuilt around other forwards? Return to Old Trafford and attempt yet another reset under the glare of expectation? Or cross the divide and try to reinvent himself at a direct Premier League rival?
Barcelona’s boardroom will not answer those questions with sentiment. If Bernardo Silva arrives to complement Gordon and potentially Álvarez, the message is clear: the Catalan giants are moving on.
The next move belongs to Rashford – and to any club bold enough to test United’s resolve at a price that suddenly looks like a bargain in a hyperinflated market.
