Former Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to continue his role within the Netherlands national team's backroom staff under newly appointed head coach Xavi Hernandez. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) aims to keep domestic continuity by retaining Van Nistelrooy alongside goalkeeping coach Patrick Lodewijks as they finalize the coaching lineup for this new era.

Van Nistelrooy's Role Confirmed

Dutch news source Algemeen Dagblad reports that Van Nistelrooy will stay on the staff after impressing during the 2026 World Cup. Alongside him, Lodewijks, who has been the goalkeeping coach since early 2023, will also remain part of the team. This setup supports Xavi's vision while maintaining an experienced local coaching presence.

"I find it an enormous honour to become the national coach of the Dutch team. As someone educated at the FC Barcelona academy, influenced by legends like Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels, I feel a special bond with Dutch football," said Xavi via KNVB's official statement."You could say I am somewhat of a son of Dutch football. Other great managers like Louis van Gaal, under whom I debuted at Barcelona, and Frank Rijkaard have shaped me both as player and coach. Our main goal is to win, but doing so in a way that reflects those values and entertains people is just as important. There is potential here and a solid foundation to build on."

A New Chapter for Oranje

The 46-year-old Catalan's arrival ushers in a fresh phase for the Netherlands, having signed a contract extending through 2030, covering Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup. He replaces Ronald Koeman, who resigned after the team's round-of-32 exit to Morocco in the recent World Cup. Xavi is the 21st foreign manager in the history of the Dutch national team and the first since Ernst Happel’s short spell between 1977 and 1978.

Xavi will make his official debut managing the Oranje in a tough UEFA Nations League match against Germany at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday, September 24.
