Marcus Rashford's Return to Manchester United Against AC Milan

Marcus Rashford is poised to pull on a Manchester United shirt for the first time since December 2024 – and he will do it against the coach who cast him aside.

Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan stand between Rashford and his long-awaited return this weekend, as Michael Carrick’s side head to Poland for their final pre-season friendly. For Rashford, it is more than just another warm-up game. It is the first real step towards a reset at his boyhood club.

Rashford’s road back

The England forward has been on a long detour. Loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona have filled the gap since his last United appearance, his Old Trafford future repeatedly questioned while others pushed to the front of the queue.

Now he comes back into a very different United setup, under a manager who has publicly backed him and privately pushed him. The reunion with Amorim, the man who froze him out, adds an edge to what would otherwise be a routine summer fixture between two European heavyweights.

Rashford sat out the 1-1 draw with Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday, with Carrick insisting the timing was just too tight.

“Marcus, Licha and Kobbie only came back a couple of days ago so they're not quite ready but we can have them for the weekend,” Carrick said, explaining the decision to hold them back.

“We trained hard, the boys who came in, Marcus, Kobbie and Licha have trained really hard and we'll have a recovery day tomorrow.

“We'll all recover tomorrow, train Friday and prepare for the game on Saturday [against Milan]. Again, we'll get the balance right of minutes."

The plan is clear: no rushing, no risks, but a meaningful taste of action in Poland.

Minutes to manage, decisions to make

Rashford, Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo are all expected to come off the bench, their minutes carefully managed in line with the players who went deep into the World Cup. The friendly may be the final tune-up, but Carrick is treating it like a controlled exercise rather than an all-out audition.

Selection headaches are already stacking up. Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko are all doubtful after missing the Leeds game, leaving gaps in key areas and forcing tweaks rather than wholesale changes.

One area that could light up is midfield. Bruno Fernandes and summer signing Youri Tielemans are in line to start together for the first time, a pairing that promises control on the ball and plenty of creativity if it clicks.

Up front, the picture is less settled. Matheus Cunha made his first appearance of pre-season in midweek, throwing his name into a crowded conversation. Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo have been operating either side of lone striker Bryan Mbeumo, and that trio has given United mobility and energy in attack.

Now Carrick has a call to make. Stick with the chemistry that has been building, or start to shape the forward line around returning stars and big signings?

A friendly with a sub-plot

For most clubs, the last pre-season game is about rhythm, sharpness, and avoiding injuries. For United, this one carries an extra narrative thread.
