Kylian Mbappe Surpasses Ronaldo's World Cup Record with Brace in France's 3-0 Victory Over Sweden

Kylian Mbappe has now overtaken Brazilian legend Ronaldo in World Cup records following his standout performance in France’s commanding 3-0 win against Sweden. The Real Madrid star scored twice, securing Les Bleus’ spot in the round of 16 with authority.

Record-Breaking Strike Just Before Half-Time

The milestone came just before halftime. After a slick one-two with Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe outpaced Sweden’s Viktor Gyokeres and fired a shot past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. This goal marked Mbappe’s ninth in World Cup knockout rounds, surpassing the previous record held by legends Leonidas and Ronaldo from Brazil.

"I know who I am, how I play, and what I want to do, but it’s not just about me," Mbappe said. "The whole team understands what needs to be done. It’s a fresh competition starting now. We played well but were a bit cautious early on. We could have done better."

Closing in on Lionel Messi’s Golden Boot

Mbappe wasn’t done yet after the break. Bradley Barcola scored early in the second half to double France’s lead, then Mbappe sealed the victory in the 74th minute. Receiving a precise pass from Michael Olise, he calmly finished into the far corner, leaving no doubt about the outcome.

This goal was Mbappe’s sixth in the 2026 tournament, tying him with Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot lead. More impressively, Mbappe now holds 18 World Cup goals total, just one shy of Messi’s all-time record of 19.

Emotional Moment with Didier Deschamps

Right after setting the new record, Mbappe rushed to celebrate alongside head coach Didier Deschamps. This was especially moving since Deschamps had missed France’s final group match against Norway due to his mother’s funeral.

Mbappe showed support, saying, "He knows he’ll never be alone with us, and we will stand by him." Deschamps responded, "We’re on a mission – and I’m with them every step of the way."

Next Challenge: Paraguay

The 3-0 result was France’s biggest knockout stage victory since their 1998 World Cup final win over Brazil. Next up, they face Paraguay on July 4 in Philadelphia for a crucial round of 16 match. With Mbappe breaking records and the team firing on all cylinders, Les Bleus look like a strong contender as the tournament intensifies across North America.
