Mexico Secures Last 32 Spot as Canada Celebrates First World Cup Win
Mexico Advances to World Cup Knockout Stage
Mexico became the first team to advance to the knockout phase of the World Cup after a narrow 1-0 win over South Korea on Thursday. The decisive moment came from a costly mistake by South Korea’s goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who gifted the goal to Mexico's Luis Romo. Mexico held on in a tense match at Guadalajara, securing their place at the top of Group A.
This victory guarantees Mexico will finish first in their group, with one game remaining. Their next match will be on home soil in Mexico City, where they will face a third-placed team from another group. South Korea currently holds second place with three points, while the Czech Republic and South Africa remain in contention with one point each.
Canada Moves Closer to Knockout Round with Historic Win
Canada edged closer to the last 32 after a dominant 6-0 victory over a depleted Qatar side in Vancouver. This marks Canada’s first-ever World Cup win, breaking a streak of six previous losses spanning the 1986 and 2022 tournaments. The match took place at BC Place Stadium with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney cheering in the crowd wearing a replica jersey.
The Canadian team ran rampant, with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick, while Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba, and an own goal by Qatar's Mohammad Manai completed the tally. Canada needs just a point against Switzerland to clinch the top spot in Group B.
Unfortunately, the celebration was clouded by a serious injury to midfielder Ismael Kone, who suffered a suspected broken leg following a harsh challenge by Qatar's Assim Madibo. Madibo initially received a yellow card, later upgraded to red. Kone was stretchered off receiving oxygen and waved to supporters as he left the pitch. Coach Jesse Marsch confirmed Kone is in hospital preparing for surgery and acknowledged the impact of losing a key player.
Switzerland Bounces Back Strongly
In Los Angeles, Switzerland revitalized their tournament hopes with a convincing 4-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. Goals from Johan Manzambi (two), Ruben Vargas, and Granit Xhaka sealed the victory. Switzerland eyes progressing past the last 16 for the first time, while Bosnia faces a tough path ahead after only earning one point from two games.
South Africa Holds On for Draw Against Czech Republic
South Africa kept slim chances alive in Group A with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in Atlanta. Michal Sadilek gave the Czech Republic the lead before Teboho Mokoena converted a late penalty to equalize. Both teams remain in the hunt for qualification but will likely need wins in their final matches to advance.
