Mexico Secures Spot in World Cup Round of 32 After Win Over South Korea

Mexico Becomes First Team to Reach 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage

Mexico kept up their perfect start at the 2026 World Cup, securing a narrow 1-0 victory against South Korea in Guadalajara. This win made them the first nation to qualify for the last 32 of the tournament.

Match Highlights

The only goal came in the 50th minute when Mexican midfielder Luis Romo capitalized on a mistake. South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball after colliding with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk, allowing Romo to tap the ball into an empty net.

South Korea's best chance to equalize arrived late in the game. In the 87th minute, Cho Gue-sung headed a close-range shot that was brilliantly saved by Mexico's keeper Raul Rangel. Rangel also blocked a follow-up attempt from Yang Hyun-jun.

Earlier in the match, South Korean captain Son Heung-min chipped the ball over Rangel, but his effort was cleared off the line by Edson Alvarez. Son's goal was ruled out for offside.

Home Crowd and Defensive Efforts

Despite some boos from the home crowd at halftime due to a lackluster first half, Mexico pushed forward. They nearly doubled their lead in the 75th minute when Raul Jimenez fired a shot from a tight angle, only for it to be saved.

Substitute Obed Vargas also tested Kim with a powerful strike that forced a diving save near the end of the match.

Group A Standings and Upcoming Fixtures

Mexico’s win keeps their 100% record intact and confirms their advancement as Group A leaders. Their next matches, including the round of 32 and potentially the round of 16, will take place in Mexico City. They could face England if the English side wins their group and first knockout match.

South Korea, despite the loss, remain well-positioned to move on after winning their opening match against the Czech Republic. They will play South Africa next on Thursday at 02:00 BST in Monterrey. Meanwhile, Mexico will face the Czech Republic at the same time in Mexico City.
