Mexico Tops Group A with Win Over South Korea, Secures World Cup Knockout Spot

Mexico Claims Group A Lead After Narrow Victory Against South Korea

On Thursday, Mexico edged out South Korea 1-0 to become the first team to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup. The match took place on home soil, adding extra pressure and excitement for the Mexican squad.

The first half lacked energy from both sides, as Mexico managed just three shots and South Korea failed to register any attempts on goal. This lackluster performance drew boos from the Mexican supporters as the teams headed into halftime without any score.

Coming out of the break, Mexico showed more determination. In the 50th minute, a critical error by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu led to the game's only goal. Kim collided with one of his own players while trying to catch the ball, losing control. The loose ball found Luis Romo, who calmly scored into an empty net.

South Korea fought back, creating several chances, but they couldn’t break through. Kim redeemed himself somewhat with three impressive saves that kept Mexico from extending their lead. On the other side, Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel was outstanding, preserving the clean sheet with multiple stops, including a remarkable double save late in the 87th minute.

This win puts Mexico at the top of Group A and confirms their advancement to the Round of 32. Holding first place means El Tri will play their knockout matches on home turf, a significant advantage. Meanwhile, South Korea still has a chance to finish second if they secure a win or draw against South Africa in their final group game.
