Napoli Sign Benoit Badiashile on Loan from Chelsea
Napoli have moved decisively to reinforce their defence, sealing a deal for Chelsea centre-back Benoit Badiashile on the eve of their Serie A kick-off.
The club confirmed on Saturday that the 25-year-old Frenchman arrives from Stamford Bridge on an initial loan with an option to buy, a structure designed to give both sides room to manoeuvre but with a clear path to a permanent stay in Naples.
“Napoli announced that it has acquired the sporting rights to the player Benoit Badiashile from Chelsea on a temporary basis with a permanent option,” read the statement on the club’s website, drawing a firm line under his short and uneven spell in London.
Loan now, big decision later
Behind the simple wording sits a significant financial play.
According to Sky Sport transfer specialist Gianluca Di Marzio, Napoli will pay a €3 million loan fee for the season. The option to buy is set at €20m, giving Chelsea a realistic chance to claw back a sizeable portion of the €37m they paid Monaco in January 2023 if the move is triggered next summer.
Italian reports this week painted a slightly different picture, with some outlets suggesting the total package could climb as high as €27m once add-ons and bonuses are included. What is not in doubt is that Napoli have secured a high-level defender at a price that could look shrewd if Badiashile settles quickly in Serie A.
Chelsea chapter closed, for now
Badiashile leaves Chelsea after a stuttering campaign in a constantly shifting environment. He made 16 appearances in all competitions last season, struggling to nail down a regular starting place amid managerial upheaval and fierce competition for spots.
His time in England has been shorter than many expected. Before arriving at Stamford Bridge, he had already built a substantial body of work at Monaco, racking up 135 competitive games in Ligue 1 and Europe and establishing himself as one of France’s most promising young defenders.
Chelsea’s summer has turned into a steady stream of departures, and Badiashile is the latest to walk through the exit. Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid, Andrey Santos has moved to Manchester United, and Trevoh Chalobah has left for Como. The reshaping of the squad continues, with the backline in particular taking on a very different look to the one that started last season.
Napoli’s defence gets its cornerstone
For Napoli, this is a statement move in a key area of the pitch.
The French international becomes their second major first-team arrival of the summer window, following the signing of Costantino Favasuli from US Catanzaro earlier in the week. Favasuli adds depth and energy; Badiashile brings height, composure and top-level experience to the heart of the defence.
True to club tradition, president Aurelio De Laurentiis was first to break cover, posting a simple “Benvenuto Benoit” on X shortly before the official announcement dropped. It was a familiar touch from a president who likes to be front and centre when big business is done.
Napoli now head into their new Serie A campaign, starting away at Genoa later today, with a fresh pillar at the back and a major piece of their summer rebuild in place. How quickly Badiashile adapts to Italian football may well shape the tone of their season.
