Nicolo Tresoldi Postpones National Team Choice Between Germany and Italy Until After 2027 U21 Euros

Club Brugge forward Nicolo Tresoldi has decided to wait until after the 2027 U21 European Championship before choosing whether to represent Germany or Italy at senior level. The 22-year-old attacker, currently playing for the German U21 team, remains torn between his country of birth and the nation where he developed as a footballer.

A Heart Split Between Two Nations

The debate over which national team Tresoldi will commit to is set to continue for some time. Despite strong interest from both the DFB and FIGC, he plans to stay with the German U21 squad through the 2027 tournament before making a final decision. Speaking with Sky Germany, Tresoldi revealed the emotional challenge this choice presents, explaining that his feelings are evenly divided. "My heart is 50:50. Both countries mean a lot to me," he said.

Discussions With Jürgen Klopp

His future took on added weight when Jürgen Klopp, the German national team coach, personally reached out to him. Klopp is eager to secure Tresoldi’s talents, especially given his impressive Champions League performances. The striker praised Klopp’s empathetic approach, saying their conversations went beyond the usual coach-player talk. "We had good conversations. I explained my situation to Kloppo, and he understood it. He is a great person. It wasn’t a coach-player conversation, but like a father-son conversation. He said that the door is always open for me," Tresoldi shared.

Roberto Mancini Also Pursues Tresoldi for Italy

Meanwhile, Italy’s head coach Roberto Mancini has been active in trying to convince Tresoldi to choose the Azzurri. Tresoldi responded to Mancini with the same honesty he showed Klopp. Born in Sardinia and raised in Italy before moving to Germany at 13, Tresoldi feels deeply connected to his Italian roots. Although he is also eligible for Argentina through his mother, the current focus remains between Germany and Italy. "It’s not just that only my father comes from Italy. I was also born there, I grew up there," he stated.

Commitment to Germany U21 for Now

For the time being, Tresoldi remains dedicated to the German U21 setup under coach Antonio Di Salvo. He looks forward to representing Germany in the upcoming European Championship qualifiers, with a crucial match against Latvia U21 scheduled soon. "I wear the Germany jersey with pride, I’m very happy to be here. I still want to play in the European Championship here. After that, we will see how things progress," he confirmed.
