Orlando Pirates Mourn the Loss of Mrs Maleshoane Chakane
Orlando Pirates are mourning the loss of one of the families closest to the club, after the passing of Mrs Maleshoane Elizabeth “Nani” Chakane on 23 June 2026.
Mrs Chakane was the beloved wife of Mr Franklin Chakane, a figure well known and deeply respected in Orlando football circles. Her death has cast a quiet, heavy shadow over a community that has long prided itself on standing together in moments of both triumph and sorrow.
The club has placed its full support behind the Chakane family, asking the wider football fraternity to hold them in their thoughts and prayers during this period of grief. Relatives, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Mrs Chakane are being remembered in the club’s condolences.
Funeral Details
The funeral service will take place on Thursday, 2 July 2026, at the Uniting Reformed Church of South Africa in Orlando East, Soweto. Proceedings are scheduled to begin at 09:00, with the service expected to run until around 11:00.
From there, the funeral procession will leave for Nasrec Cemetery, where the burial will be held.
Mourners are also being received at the family home at 1173 Jacobs Street, Protea North, Soweto, where the Chakane household has opened its doors to those wishing to pay their respects.
In a sport driven by noise, passion, and colour, this is a quieter moment for Orlando Pirates – one of reflection, respect, and shared mourning alongside the Chakane family.
