Paul Scholes Calls on Manchester United to Sign Newcastle’s Lewis Hall for £75m Amid Luke Shaw’s Defensive Issues

Paul Scholes, the Manchester United legend, has pushed for the club to make a late attempt to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle United. This comes after watching Luke Shaw struggle defensively during United’s recent Premier League win.

Concerns Over Defensive Stability

Despite United’s 5-2 victory against Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, Scholes expressed worry about the team's defense under manager Michael Carrick. Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, he said the first half performance could have led to conceding multiple goals.

"I think United would have taken going 1-0 down, the way they played in the first half. It could have been two or three," Scholes remarked. "What we saw yesterday sums up what you’re going to get from United. They could have been two or three down but also, you look at the second half, and they were devastating."

Potential £75m Transfer Fee

Hall has been a target for United for some time, but Newcastle have held firm, considering him an important player. Reports say the Magpies might reconsider if an offer of around £75 million arrives before the transfer window closes.

Scholes pointed out that Shaw’s difficulties against Ipswich winger Abdul Fatawu might encourage Carrick to push for reinforcements urgently.

"100 per cent. That will have been going on for months, not just the last couple of days," Scholes explained. "Do you know one thing that might help Michael? Shaw getting done yesterday like he did. So he might go, 'Look, we need him,' and you think Hall might be the most doable who is out there and available."

Rio Ferdinand Stands by Shaw

Meanwhile, former United defender Rio Ferdinand took a more cautious stance. He acknowledged Shaw had a tough match but praised his consistency over the past year.

"In a couple of my WhatsApp chats, some United fans were saying, Shaw, get rid! ... Shaw, over the last year, has been one of our most consistent performers," Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. "Go and get a left-back that we want to actually bed in over time to be a replacement for someone like Shaw. You think you’re going to go in the market and find someone?"

Exploring Other Left-Back Options

As the transfer deadline nears, United are reportedly considering several alternatives if Hall proves too expensive. Scouts have looked at players such as Ferdi Kadioglu from Brighton, Ian Maatsen of Aston Villa, and Jorge Salinas from Racing Santander.

A loan deal seems likely given United’s recent investment in midfield this summer.
