Rangers Secure Dan Neil from Sunderland on Free Transfer
Rangers have won the race for Dan Neil, landing the Sunderland captain on a free and prising him away from the brink of a move to Southampton.
The 24-year-old midfielder has signed a three-year deal at Ibrox, becoming Derek McInnes’ fifth summer recruit and arguably his most eye-catching so far.
From South Shields to Ibrox
Neil is not a prospect. He arrives as a fully-formed, battle-tested midfielder with the scars and stature of a leader.
Born in South Shields, he joined Sunderland’s Academy of Light as a nine-year-old back in 2010 and grew into the heartbeat of his hometown club. By 16 he had his debut. By 24 he had 201 senior appearances, 12 goals, an EFL Trophy, and a promotion to the Premier League as captain on his CV.
He helped drag Sunderland back up the ladder, first as a key figure in League One, then as a regular in the Championship. The climb culminated in that dramatic 2024/25 play-off campaign, where he wore the armband and led the Black Cats out at Wembley. A 2-1 win over Sheffield United ended an eight-year exile from the top flight and stamped his authority as a leader under Régis Le Bris.
That is the player Rangers have just taken for nothing.
A late twist in the chase
For months, the smart money had Neil heading to the south coast. Reports suggested Southampton were closing in, the deal edging towards completion.
Then Rangers moved.
At the eleventh hour, the Ibrox club stepped in with an improved offer and the project that convinced Neil to take his next step in Glasgow rather than the Premier League new boys. For a player who thrives under expectation, the pull of Ibrox and its demands clearly hit the right note.
“It is a new chapter for myself, and I am really excited to be signing for Rangers. I’m really looking forward to what the next few years can bring,” Neil said after the deal was confirmed.
He knows exactly what kind of pressure he is walking into.
“I have played for Sunderland for a number of years and the weight and expectation of the fans to win every week and the feeling of it making or breaking people’s weekends is something that drives me.
“I’ve spoken to many people who have been here, and they said it’s a very similar feeling, and as a character and a person that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career.”
Promotion specialist with bite
Neil’s last campaign underlined his versatility and resilience. Frozen out of the Sunderland side after promotion, he went on loan to Ipswich Town for the second half of the season and slotted straight into another promotion push.
He made 16 Championship appearances for the Tractor Boys, adding energy and control in midfield as they secured their own route to the Premier League. Two clubs, two promotions on his watch. That kind of pedigree travels well.
Across that 2024/25 season with Sunderland, he played 47 league games and scored twice, all while carrying the captaincy in a side under intense scrutiny. Those numbers tell part of the story. The rest lies in his style: technically secure, strong in possession, able to knit play and still contribute in the final third, with the engine to press and harry for 90 minutes.
McInnes did not hide his satisfaction.
“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome Dan to the club. He will be an excellent addition to our squad,” the Rangers boss said.
“He is a technically gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team.
“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025.
“I’m really looking forward to working with Dan throughout pre-season as we prepare for the challenges ahead.”
McInnes shapes his Rangers
This is not a scattergun rebuild. Neil joins Lawrence Shankland, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey and Ivor Pandur as part of a clear plan from McInnes to harden the spine of his team with players who know responsibility and expectation.
A prolific domestic goalscorer. A versatile, combative Scot returning with Premier League experience. A rugged defender. A new goalkeeper. And now a captain who has already carried a giant of English football back into the light.
Rangers’ statement underlined exactly what they believe they have secured: a former England youth international, a promotion-winning leader, and a midfielder entering his prime years with no transfer fee attached, only wages and ambition to negotiate.
For Neil, Sunderland is now in the rear-view mirror. The boy who walked into the Academy of Light at nine leaves as a captain and a promotion winner. The man who walks into Ibrox does so with the same weight of expectation he craves, only louder, sharper, and more unforgiving.
That is precisely why Rangers wanted him.
Pre-season will offer the first glimpse of how McInnes intends to use his new midfielder. The real judgment, as always at Ibrox, will come when the games start to decide titles and trophies, and when weekends across Glasgow rise or fall on the back of his decisions in the middle of the pitch.
