Six signings are through the door, the squad looks heavier with experience and pedigree, yet the message from inside Valdebebas is clear: the rebuild is not done. Not even close.

According to journalist Juanma Rodriguez, as relayed by Defensa Central, Real Madrid are planning three more additions before the window shuts. Not tweaks. Not cosmetic touches. Three targeted moves, with a centre-back and a midfielder right at the heart of the plan.

Six in already – and still not enough

The club moved early. Very early.

Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries arrived before the World Cup, signalling a front-foot approach to the market. Carlos Espi and Yan Diomande have since stepped up into the first-team setup, adding fresh legs and options across the pitch.

On paper, that looks like a complete overhaul. In practice, it’s phase one.

Rodriguez has been adamant that more is coming.

“There will be more moves, from what I'm told. I understand there will be three signings. One of them is a centre-back and another a midfielder. I mean, beyond what has already been signed,” he explained.

Those words cut through the usual summer noise. Real Madrid are not just reacting to opportunities; they are following a clear blueprint shaped by José Mourinho.

Mourinho’s blueprint: build from the back

The Portuguese coach has never hidden what he wants. Since the day he walked into Valdebebas, two positions have sat at the top of his list: a centre-back and a positional midfielder.

The need for another central defender has only grown sharper. Mourinho wants depth, but not just any depth – he wants another player who can genuinely compete for a starting place, not simply fill gaps when injuries bite.

That is where Alessandro Bastoni comes in.

The Inter defender is one of the names most closely linked to Mourinho’s plans. Bastoni fits the modern profile: comfortable on the ball, strong in duels, and tactically intelligent enough to anchor a high-level back line. He is understood to be one of the coach’s preferred targets.

There is a catch. His arrival is tied to an exit.

Raul Asencio is not part of Mourinho’s plans, and his departure could trigger the chain reaction Madrid need in the centre-back department. Until that situation is resolved, Bastoni – or any other major defensive signing – remains an idea rather than a certainty.

The missing piece in midfield

If the defence needs another pillar, the midfield needs balance.

Mourinho has been consistent: he wants a positional midfielder, someone who can sit in front of the back four, protect, organise, and give structure to the rest of the team. Not a luxury playmaker, not a pure runner, but a player who understands spacing, tempo and defensive responsibility.

That profile has been a priority since his arrival. The search is active.

Real Madrid are monitoring several options, including Adam Wharton and Kees Smit, as they try to nail down the right fit. Both names point in the same direction: a midfielder with the discipline to hold his zone and the intelligence to knit together transitions.

Whether Wharton, Smit or another candidate ends up wearing white is still open. What is not in doubt is the role itself. Madrid want that anchor, and Mourinho is pushing hard to get it.
