Rodri Begins Barcelona Journey as Cancelo Rejoins Team
Rodri’s first real day as a Barcelona player did not come with the usual photos of rondos and jokes in the main circle. The club’s blockbuster summer signing stepped onto the training pitch on Friday, but on his own lane, away from the core group and under a tailored programme.
The World Cup winner had already taken part in the pre-match activation before the Joan Gamper Trophy, a light taste of work in Blaugrana colours. This time the session was more serious, more specific. Fresh back from his holidays and only a few days into his new routine, the 30-year-old is being eased in, with the club following a plan designed to bring him up to full speed without cutting corners, as reported by SPORT.
“I’m ready to play already”
At his official presentation, Rodri was bullish about his condition and keen to shut down any lingering doubts over his fitness.
“I’m ready to play already. The back operation that was talked about was nothing, it was an outpatient procedure. I’m ready to train with the team and, when the coach decides, once I’ve got some rhythm, I’ll be ready to play. I hope it will be as soon as possible.”
Barcelona, though, are choosing caution over adrenaline. After a rest day on Thursday, Hansi Flick’s squad returned to work to prepare for Sunday’s La Liga opener away to Elche at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero. While the bulk of the squad went through a standard, high-intensity session, Rodri’s workload stayed a notch below that of his new teammates.
He is not out of the picture for the first official match of the season. Far from it. Saturday’s final training session and Flick’s subsequent press conference will be decisive in gauging whether the midfielder can be fast-tracked into his first minutes in a Barça shirt.
The German coach has already drawn a clear line this summer: no gambles. His staff’s priority is non-negotiable — every player gets as long as they need to hit full fitness, even if that means delaying a much-anticipated debut.
Cancelo finally back in the fold
While Rodri followed his individual script, Joao Cancelo finally slipped back into something that felt familiar: a full group session at Barcelona’s training ground.
After several tense weeks spent waiting for his return to Spotify Camp Nou to be finalised, the Portuguese full-back at last rejoined collective work on Friday. The uncertainty, the waiting, the off-pitch noise — all of it briefly faded as he laced up and trained normally with the rest of the first team.
Whether Flick calls him into the squad for Elche is another matter. Before the coach can even think about using him, the club must complete his registration. At this stage, none of Barça’s new signings have been registered for competition. Even Andreas Christensen, who extended his contract this summer, remains unregistered.
On the grass, though, Cancelo looked like just another piece of Flick’s puzzle. He worked alongside all available first-team players and a sizeable group of youngsters: Eder Aller, Xavi Espart, Jordi Pesquer, Ebrima Tunkara, Orian Goren, Hamza Abdelkarim, Brian Farinas and Alvaro Cortes all joined the session, a reminder of the club’s reliance on academy depth as the administrative work drags on.
So Barcelona edge towards their league opener with a curious mix of excitement and restraint. The big names are here. The ideas are in place. The question now is not who wants to play, but who the club can actually put on the teamsheet in Elche.
