Manchester United Target Jorge Salinas to Solve Left-Back Issue

Manchester United are ready to muscle in on Racing Santander’s prized teenager Jorge Salinas as the club scrambles to solve a growing problem at left-back before the transfer window closes.

The 19-year-old, fresh from helping Racing clinch promotion to La Liga, has suddenly moved high up United’s list of options, with sporting director Chema Aragon openly conceding the defender can go if his £14 million release clause is triggered.

United’s left-back puzzle

Michael Carrick’s squad is light in a position that has quietly become a major concern. Luke Shaw is entering the final year of his contract. Patrick Dorgu has been pushed further forward and now looks more like a winger than a full-back. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui can fill in, but both are right-backs by trade.

Behind them, academy talent Harry Amass offers promise but not experience. United want someone who can play now, not just in three years.

Lewis Hall looked like that solution. Newcastle’s young full-back, with Premier League minutes and clear upside, emerged as a leading target. Then the market shifted. Major departures at St James’ Park – Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali – changed Newcastle’s stance, and a deal for Hall has drifted towards the unlikely just as the clock begins to bite on the window.

So United have turned to Spain.

Salinas in the spotlight

Jorge Salinas is not short of admirers. The left-back delivered seven assists in 34 games across all competitions last season, an impressive haul for a teenager in a promotion campaign. His form has drawn interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, and now, increasingly, from Old Trafford.

Reports in Spain, via Infobae, suggest Atletico have already tested Racing’s resolve with a £12m bid. It was rejected. Racing want the full release clause – around €16m – or nothing.

Racing have tried to protect their asset. Salinas’ current deal runs to 2029, and the club have put an extension on the table. For now, the player is said to be waiting, watching the final weeks of the window unfold and holding out for a move that suits both his ambitions and his development.

Atletico were expected to drive this transfer, but hesitation has crept in. According to the same reports, their struggle to close an agreement has opened the door for United to step into the race.

Deadline pressure in Spain

The story has now become a tug-of-war. Atletico, aware of United’s interest, have reportedly set a deadline for this weekend to get the deal done. The message from Madrid is blunt: if there is no progress, they will walk away and effectively hand United a clear run at the Spain U19 international.

Inside Racing, the constant swirl of speculation is starting to grate. Sporting director Chema Aragon voiced his irritation via SportWitness.

“You’re all going on about this every day. First, it’s about the release clause; then, it’s about one club or another,” he said, insisting that the noise has not distracted the player. “Thankfully, the kid is focused. If someone comes along, brings the €16m, and the boy likes the team, he’ll leave.”

That is the equation. No posturing, no mystery. Pay the clause, convince the player.

For United, with less than two weeks left in the window and a glaring need on the left of defence, the question is simple: do they move aggressively now for a teenager rising fast in Spain, or risk watching another long-term solution slip away?
