Tottenham Finalizes £85m Deal for Savinho from Manchester City
Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Savinho has moved from rumour to reality, with detailed terms of the winger’s move from Manchester City now emerging.
What began with a typically loud Fabrizio Romano announcement has been backed up by David Ornstein of The Athletic, who reports that Spurs have reached an agreement with City for a package worth up to £85m.
Big money, big bet
The structure of the deal is clearer now. Tottenham will pay a £75m fixed fee, with a further £10m in add-ons. Of those bonuses, £5m are described as highly achievable, which, in practical terms, makes this one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history.
It is a huge outlay for a player who is still relatively unproven at the very top level, even if his talent is obvious and his desire to join Spurs has been evident for weeks. But this is a club that has been aggressive and organised in clearing out unwanted players, and the net spend is expected to look more measured once all the ins and outs of the window are tallied.
The Marmoush angle
The Savinho fee does not sit in isolation. It is understood to be closely tied to a separate move for Omar Marmoush, also from Manchester City, with that deal described as being at an advanced stage.
Tottenham are believed to have nudged up the price for Savinho with the expectation of pushing down the fee for Marmoush. The logic? Help City trim their overall outlay by limiting what Eintracht Frankfurt receive from a sell-on clause in Marmoush’s deal.
It is the kind of manoeuvre that raises eyebrows but not necessarily alarm bells. Clubs work around sell-on clauses and balance sheets like this all the time. Spurs themselves used similar leverage when structuring the fee for Giovani Lo Celso in negotiations involving Real Betis and PSG.
When will Savinho play?
The excitement around Savinho’s arrival is understandable, but expectations on timing need to be tempered. With the agreement only just reached and formalities still to be completed, the winger is not expected to feature for Tottenham’s trip to Brentford this weekend.
Once the paperwork is done, he will join training quickly. If all goes smoothly, a first glimpse of him in a Spurs shirt could come in the midweek League Cup tie at home to Charlton, even if only in a limited role.
And if the Marmoush deal follows as anticipated, Savinho might not be the only new face stepping out under the lights in N17.
